Sinossi

"Time Myths" explores the fascinating connection between how we track time today and the ancient myths that continue to shape our understanding of cosmic cycles. It argues that our current scientific and historical views on time are deeply rooted in cultural narratives, challenging the notion of time as solely objective. For instance, many ancient calendars, such as the Mayan or Egyptian, weren't just about marking days; they were tangible expressions of mythological beliefs. The book progresses by first introducing fundamental concepts of time and mythology, then analyzing specific calendars to reveal embedded narratives. It supports its claims with archaeological findings, ancient texts, and astronomical data. By comparing ancient myths with modern scientific practices, "Time Myths" reveals hidden cultural biases in our understanding of time. This approach offers readers fresh insights into modern interpretations of time and its impact on society, highlighting how our perception of time is a cultural construct. Ultimately, recognizing the cultural relativity of time, as "Time Myths" advocates, can deepen our understanding of diverse societies and worldviews. This recognition is crucial for cross-cultural communication and education. The book provides a unique perspective on the cultural construction of time, valuable for anyone interested in history, science, or mythology.

It Did Happen Here - A History...

In this satirical alternative history, Professor Jeronimo Herodotease and his team of documentary filmmakers and reenactors revivify the dark days of the Grim Depression and Amerika's descent into dictatorship. In the chaos and strife that followed the assassination of President-elect Frankie van Rosenvelt, General Jackson and a cadre of Forcist-minded cockroaches swarmed the stage, gnawed away at democratic norms, and declared martial law under the guise of restoring "Law and Order." Minorities and illegal aliens were scapegoated for the nation's woes, and dissenters daring to oppose the regime found themselves attacked by the Faux Outlet for News and Entertainment, whisked away to detention camps, or forced into exile. In retelling the stories of radicals and reactionaries, statesmen and demagogues, cultural producers and political censors, Herodotease reveals a polarized Amerika not unlike that of our own contentious age. Woven into the fabric of the narrative are a plethora of vintage photographs, historical artifacts, and propaganda art, all courtesy of The Wolfsonian–Florida International University. While included with the aim of bringing the persons and events of the 1930s back to life, many of these illustrations have been purposefully manipulated or supplied with deliberately deceptive descriptions to challenge those persons who believe everything they see, to think again. In this era of Facebook fakes, misinformation, and disinformation, unless we remain ever vigilant, it can happen here!

    Pragmatism - Philosophy and...

Pragmatism is a philosophy that emphasizes the practical application of ideas by focusing on their consequences and real-world outcomes. Rooted in the belief that thought should be guided by experience, pragmatism challenges the notion of abstract, detached theorizing. Rather than searching for eternal truths or fixed principles, pragmatists argue that the value of ideas is measured by their usefulness in addressing human needs and solving practical problems. This approach seeks to bridge the gap between philosophy and everyday life, transforming ideas into action.
At the heart of pragmatism lies the concept of truth, which is not seen as an abstract, objective reality but as something that emerges through interaction with the world. For pragmatists like Charles Peirce and William James, truth is dynamic and evolves based on what works in practice. Ideas and beliefs are continuously tested, refined, and adjusted according to their ability to produce positive outcomes in human experience. Truth, then, becomes a process of inquiry, always in the making and never static.
The philosophy of pragmatism is also deeply concerned with the connection between thought and action. It suggests that knowledge is not just something to be passively absorbed, but a tool to be actively employed in solving problems. This perspective challenges traditional philosophies that prioritize theory over practice and encourages individuals to test their ideas in real-world contexts. Whether in science, ethics, politics, or personal life, pragmatism urges a philosophy that is not only reflective but also responsive to the ever-changing circumstances of human existence.

The Case of the Married Woman -...

Caroline Norton dazzled nineteenth-century society with her vivacity, her intelligence, her poetry, and in her role as an artist's muse. After her marriage in 1828 to the MP George Norton, she continued to attract friends and admirers to her salon in Westminster. Most prominent among her admirers was the widowed Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne.

Racked with jealousy, George Norton took the Prime Minister to court, suing him for damages on account of his adultery with Caroline. A dramatic trial followed. Despite the unexpected and sensational result—acquittal—Norton was still able to legally deny Caroline access to her children. He also claimed her income as an author for himself, since the copyrights of a married woman belonged to her husband.

Yet Caroline refused to despair. Beset by the personal cruelties perpetrated by her husband and a society whose rules were set against her, she chose to fight. She channeled her energies in an area of much-needed reform: the rights of a married woman and specifically those of a mother. She campaigned tirelessly, achieving her first landmark victory with the Infant Custody Act of 1839. Provisions which are now taken for granted owe much to Caroline, who was determined to secure justice for women at all levels of society from the privileged to the dispossessed.
