  The Second World War was fought not only on the front lines but also in secrets, some of which have never been revealed. One such secret was buried in the deep, dark forest of Katyn, Poland. The other in the pages of a notebook hidden in an otherwise unremarkable café in an ancient Polish city.
  		 
  That notebook, known as the Scottish Book, was an obscure work of intellectual gamesmanship between a specialized group of mathematicians who met at a local pub near the town’s medieval university, where they shared and solved complex mathematical problems in the pages of the book. In 1939, as the Nazis overran the country, the book mysteriously vanished from its hiding place in the café. Some of its contributors avoided certain death by fleeing Poland  for America, where the government recruited them. Ultimately, some of these intellectuals became participants in a deadly undertaking: the Manhattan Project.
  		 
  Who Has Buried the Dead? may be fiction, but it draws on years of research to plausibly answer the real questions surrounding one of the last great secrets of the Second World War. What did the Scottish Book contain that led the NKVD, the Gestapo, and the Allies on a desperate search, using any means to find it?   How can ordinary people, whom we consider "normal," unexpectedly commit repulsive and criminal actions that we would never have thought them capable of? The concept of evil is one of the great themes in history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. We have always tended to categorize the perpetrators of evil as "the others," "them," bad people, monsters, and true villains who commit atrocities that "we" could never carry out. The German philosopher Hannah Arendt challenged this clear distinction between inherently good people and inherently bad people and introduced a new, original paradigm known as the "banality of evil." 
  Arendt's concept suggests that the vast majority of German soldiers who followed Hitler's orders and committed horrific crimes were not sadistic monsters but ordinary men, not much different from us. These normal men, placed within a context of hierarchy, modern bureaucracy, and obedience to authority, were capable of killings, abuse, torture, and inhumane treatment of victims. In essence, there were monsters, yes, but they were few, far fewer than commonly believed. Starting from here, we aim to answer how ordinary people can transform into real monsters.   In April 1945, German troops withdrawing from the Seelow Heights were encircled by the Soviet Army near the small town of Halbe, south-east of Berlin. Rather than surrender, their orders were to attempt to break out, westward, and join up with the German twelfth Army. A brutal battle ensued, with an estimated 30,000 German and 20,000 Russian soldiers killed, along with thousands of civilians.
