Summary

"Hellenistic Science" examines the often-overlooked scientific advancements of the Hellenistic period, a time of cultural exchange following Alexander the Great. It argues that this era wasn't a decline from classical Greece but a unique transformation, emphasizing empirical observation and mathematical modeling. The book highlights breakthroughs in mathematics, physics, and medicine, showing how Hellenistic thinkers moved beyond philosophical speculation to create empirically grounded models. For instance, the establishment of the Library of Alexandria fostered collaboration, enabling significant progress in various fields.

The book progresses by first setting the geopolitical stage, then delving into the lives and works of key figures like Euclid and Archimedes, showcasing their contributions to geometry and mechanics. It also explores medical advancements, such as the anatomical studies of Herophilus and Erasistratus. By examining the interconnectedness of different scientific disciplines, "Hellenistic Science" provides a fresh perspective on the intellectual foundations of modern science. It demonstrates how mathematical innovations informed advancements in astronomy and how anatomical discoveries influenced medical practice, ultimately challenging conventional narratives about this pivotal era.

“A fascinating, comprehensive, and accessible exploration of life’s most fundamental questions. If you’re wondering who we are and why we’re here, this book is a great place to start.”—Mark Gober, award-winning author of An End to Upside Down Thinking and board member at the Institute of Noetic SciencesIs our physical universe actually a virtual simulation that is thought into existence by consciousness? Noted astrophysicist Bernard Haisch explores the frontiers of science, consciousness, and God, revolutionizing our understanding of the universe and what’s behind it all.Have you ever wondered why and how the world around you came to exist and whether there might be another experience awaiting you after the physical body dies? Might there actually be a God and a heaven of some sort? Without consciousness there is nothing. The hypothesis presented in this book is that our seemingly physical universe of matter and energy is a virtual simulation which is thought into existence by a universal consciousness which we call God. Authors Bernard Haisch and Marsha Sims tackle age-old metaphysical questions such as the following:Are near-death experiences real? What is the zero-point field? What kind of being could God be?Is there some place that God could have come from? How does the Big Bang figure into this?It there an afterlife, and what could it be like? What is the purpose of life?Is consciousness all there is?Is the universe a virtual reality? Why is hell impossible?

The first full analysis of the second Nagorno-Karabakh war—the first war in history won primarily by unmanned systems.

The second Nagorno-Karabakh war—fought between Armenia and Azerbaijan between September 24 and November 10, 2020—was the first war in history won primarily by unmanned systems.

This forty-four-day war resulted in a decisive military victory for Azerbaijan. Armenia was outfought, outnumbered, and outspent and lost even though they controlled the high ground in a mountainous region that favored traditional defense. Azerbaijan's alliance with Turkey, and close technological support from Israel, strategically isolated Armenia. In addition, Turkey's posturing influenced the Russians not to intervene to support Armenia. That Azerbaijan attacked Armenia during the pandemic was an additional factor. The fact that Azerbaijan won the war is not extraordinary, considering the correlation of forces arrayed against Armenia. What is exceptional is that this was the first modern war primarily decided by unmanned weapons. In this war the Turkish-made BAYRAKTAR TB2 Unmanned Air Combat Vehicle (UCAV) and the Israeli-made HAROP Loitering Munition (LM) dominated the fighting and provided Azerbaijan with a war-winning advantage.

‘A riveting read that skips along at pace. Illuminating and concerning, it lifts the lid on the tawdry world of Westminster powerbroking’ Tim Shipman, The Times
YOU THINK YOU LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE THE ELECTED ARE CHOSEN BY THE PEOPLE.
    THINK AGAIN.
When Boris Johnson came to power in 2019, he did so with the largest Conservative majority since Margaret Thatcher. Rewriting the political map, he united a party and shattered Labour’s fabled red wall. And yet, just three years later, he was ousted by the same members who had once greeted his leadership so rapturously.
    What had gone so wrong?
The Plot is the seismic, fly-on-the-wall account of how the saviour of the Conservative Party became a pariah. Told with unparalleled access, from multiple inside sources talking with astonishing candour, it reveals the shocking truth about powerful forces operating behind the scenes in the heart of Westminster and those who became the architects of a Prime Minister’s downfall.
This is the story of a damning trail of treachery and deceit fuelled by an obsessive pursuit of power, which threatens to topple the very fabric of our democracy.
The Plot is a non-fiction biography that takes readers on a journey through the labyrinth of political parties, ideologies, and the heads that govern them. Penned by Sunday Times bestselling author Nadine Dorries, it's a revealing look at the corruption and misconduct that often goes unnoticed.
For fans of Rory Stewart (Politics On the Edge), and Barbra Streisand (My Name is Barbra).

    Misfire - The Sarajevo...

The story has so often been told: Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Habsburg Empire, was shot dead on June 28, 1914, in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. Thirty days later, the Archduke's uncle, Emperor Franz Joseph, declared war on the Kingdom of Serbia, producing the chain reaction of European powers entering the First World War.

In Misfire, Paul Miller-Melamed narrates the history of the Sarajevo assassination and the origins of World War I from the perspective of the Balkans. Miller-Melamed embeds the incident in the longer-term conditions of the Balkans that gave rise to the political murder. He thus illuminates the centrality of the Bosnian Crisis and the Balkan Wars of the early twentieth century to European power politics, while explaining how Serbs, Bosnians, and Habsburg leaders negotiated their positions in a dangerous geopolitical environment. Despite the absence of evidence tying official Serbia to the assassination conspiracy, Miller-Melamed shows how it spiraled into a diplomatic crisis that European statesmen proved unable to resolve peacefully.

Contrasting the vast disproportionality between a single deadly act and an act of war that would leave ten million dead, Misfire contends that the real causes for the world war lie in "civilized" Europe rather than the endlessly discussed political murder.
