  Roman medicine was a blend of practical knowledge, religious beliefs, and influences from earlier civilizations, particularly the Greeks and Etruscans. While early Roman healing methods were deeply rooted in superstition, the expansion of the empire led to the adoption of more systematic medical practices. Over time, Roman medicine evolved into a structured system that combined natural remedies, surgical techniques, and public health initiatives. 
  Greek influence played a significant role in shaping Roman medical knowledge. Before Rome conquered Greece, healing in the Roman Republic was often associated with household remedies and religious rituals. However, as Greek physicians such as Archagathus and later Galen entered Rome, their advanced knowledge in anatomy, surgery, and pharmacology became widely accepted. Many Roman physicians were either trained by Greek mentors or studied Greek medical texts. Hippocratic principles, which emphasized observation and diagnosis, became foundational in Roman medical education. 
  Despite the growing reliance on scientific methods, religion and superstition remained integral to Roman healing practices. The Romans believed that diseases could be divine punishments or warnings from the gods. Temples dedicated to deities like Aesculapius, the god of medicine, served as healing centers where the sick sought divine intervention. Priests and healers performed rituals and sacrifices to appease the gods and cure ailments. Additionally, charms, amulets, and incantations were commonly used to ward off illness. Even as medical science progressed, many Romans continued to rely on religious customs for healing.

  In popular media and culture, the Paleolithic era is often depicted as a time when humans were completely savage, spoke with little more than grunts, hit women over their heads with clubs and kidnapped them, and of course, everyone lived in caves. The reality is that the Paleolithic era was a time of great change when humans coalesced into groups and developed different technologies that helped them survive and ultimately thrive in harsh environments. Among the most important technologies developed by Paleolithic humans were those helping them hunt because, after all, the Paleolithic era was when humans lived as hunters and gatherers, so human survival and advancement were contingent upon developing better tools and weapons.  
  Any examination of the Clovis culture begins with what is known. Archaeologists know the approximate chronological and geographic range of the Clovis culture, and they can identify what made the Clovis people unique. These were the projectile points the Clovis people made, setting them apart from most people that came before and after them, and it was those same tools that made them a successful people for such an extended period in the harsh climate of the Upper Paleolithic era (50,000 to 12,000 years ago). Scholars have also determined that the Clovis people were big game hunters, chasing and killing mammoths and other now-extinct animals across North America. The picture that has emerged of the Clovis people is one of an industrious, resourceful, and prolific people who became masters of the environment and North America for approximately 2,000 years. That being said, there is also much that is not known about the Clovis culture. For example, the Clovis people’s religious ideas, particularly about their views on an afterlife, remain a mystery. The lack of art at Clovis sites has also raised more questions, including if it was the result of a dearth of materials or societal norms and taboos.

  “The Five Good Emperors,” a reference to the five emperors who ruled the Roman Empire between 96 and 180 CE (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius), was a term first coined by Machiavelli and later adopted and popularized by historian Edward Gibbon, who said that under these men, the Roman Empire “was governed by absolute power under the guidance of wisdom and virtue.”  
  	This period of 84 years is generally regarded as the high point of the Roman Empire, at least after Augustus, but what is uncertain and a matter of ongoing debate is whether the five emperors were personally responsible for the situation and the accompanying prosperity enjoyed throughout the empire at the time or if they were simply the beneficiaries of the Pax Romana, inaugurated by Augustus in the early part of the 1st century CE. In other words, historians have wondered whether anyone in power during those years would have enjoyed the same rewards.  
  	The description of these rulers as “good” is also a matter of interpretation, with some scholars suggesting they were only “good” in comparison to the preceding emperor (Domitian) and the emperor who followed Marcus Aurelius (Commodus). Both of them were horrible rulers in every aspect, making their near contemporaries look all the better.  
  	Regardless, it is clear that the era of the Five Good Emperors was one of unparalleled success and wealth, and the reasons Rome reached its zenith at this time are worthy of scrutiny. Perhaps most noteworthy is that none of these five emperors were blood relatives - while the final two are often referred to as the Antonines, they were not, in fact, related except by adoption, a practice that may in itself provide at least part of the answer to the question as to why this particular period was so magnificent.
