Sinossi

Eclipse Legends explores the captivating role of solar and lunar eclipses in shaping ancient myths and religious interpretations across diverse cultures. The book examines how these celestial events, often viewed as omens or acts of divine intervention, influenced humanity's understanding of the cosmos. Intriguingly, some cultures believed eclipses were caused by celestial dragons devouring the sun. The study of eclipse legends reveals consistent patterns of interpretation across geographically disparate cultures, demonstrating a universal human response to these dramatic celestial events.

This book approaches the topic by dissecting mythological narratives and analyzing the role of eclipses in shaping prophetic traditions and religious practices. By examining ancient astronomical knowledge, religious beliefs, and social structures, Eclipse Legends argues that these events served as powerful catalysts in the development of ancient mythologies and religious systems. Beginning with the astronomical mechanics of eclipses, the book progresses through specific regional traditions, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and Mesoamerica, before synthesizing findings and analyzing common threads.

The value of this book lies in its global, comparative approach, examining the interconnectedness of astronomical phenomena, religious beliefs, and social practices. Readers interested in history and religion will gain a deeper understanding of how ancient civilizations interpreted the natural world and the profound influence of celestial events on human beliefs. The book incorporates archaeological evidence, textual analysis of ancient religious texts, and comparative mythology to provide a comprehensive overview.

A crucial component of anti-Black racism is the unconscionable disparity in health outcomes between Black and white Americans. Sickening examines this institutionalized inequality through dramatic, concrete events from the past two decades, revealing how unequal living conditions and inadequate medical care have become routine.

From the spike in chronic disease after Hurricane Katrina to the lack of protection for Black residents during the Flint water crisis—and even the life-threatening childbirth experience for tennis star Serena Williams—author Anne Pollock takes listeners on a journey through the diversity of anti-Black racism operating in healthcare. She goes beneath the surface to deconstruct the structures that make these events possible, including mass incarceration, police brutality, and the hypervisibility of Black athletes' bodies. Ultimately, Sickening shows what these shocking events reveal about the everyday racialization of health in the United States.

Concluding with an examination of racialized healthcare during the COVID pandemic and the Black Lives Matter rebellions of 2020, Sickening cuts through the mind-numbing statistics to vividly portray healthcare inequalities. In a gripping style, Pollock shows the devastating reality and consequences of systemic racism on the lives and health of Black Americans.

By the time the Pleistocene Epoch ended around 12,000 years ago, Homo sapiens had become one of the most significant species on the planet. It was also near the end of that period of time that modern humans began to gradually populate what would become Europe, Asia, and the Americas, eventually becoming the inheritors of the Paleolithic era and the only human species to make it into the Neolithic era. The process was long and difficult, and the survival of the species only happened through a combination of human tenacity and a fair amount of luck. As much as humans evolved during the Pleistocene, the topography, geography, and environment changed even more.
The cold Pleistocene temperatures lowered water levels across the planet, exposing land that was not there before or after the period. At the same time, significant regions of the planet were very different during the Pleistocene, including Southeast Asia, particularly the modern islands of Bali, Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, roughly equivalent to parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. This region, which modern scholars refer to as Sunda or Sundaland, was unique because all of it was connected by land, meaning today’s islands were once part of a contiguous subcontinent, and in terms of the people, flora, and fauna, it was very different than it is today. If a modern traveler could somehow transport back to the Pleistocene, Sundaland would look nothing like modern Southeast Asia and would resemble as much of a lost world as something out of a science fiction novel.
Although much is still unknown about Sundaland, researchers have uncovered plenty of evidence bringing this lost world to life. As anthropologists and archaeologists developed new models and discovered ancient material culture, they learned that Sundaland played a significant role in the development of Neolithic Southeast Asia in many ways.
