Sinossi

The Unlikely Heroes of World War IIThere are thousands of stories of bravery, sacrifice, ingenuity in the annals of World War II. Few stories are more fascinating, more improbable and less well-known than that of the Navajo Code Talkers. These shadowy men, drafted out of the Navajo Nation, were critical to the Allied victory, using a secret language that the enemy would never break. In order to explain why the Code Talkers were so important, we must set the stage. In early 1940s, the Pacific war wasn’t looking good for the Allies.

In this third collection of poems Papadopoulos addresses the historical subject of the Pontic Greek massacre in the 1920’s in a series of “sonnet-monologues” that link cinematically to create a very specific, semi-fictional account of a group of people living within this particular historic context.  His own  Greek family is of Pontic and Cretan origin, and he traveled the black sea extensively while writing these poems, but the abstracted landscapes and the slightly “grotesque” characters that inhabit these poems lead anyone, regardless of his/her knowledge of the region,  into a new and intimate relationship with this volatile and tragic story.
"The Black Sea won’t be for everyone. The subject is unrelentingly dark, rarely leavened by humor, and the history involved is known to few Americans. But it is a superb book, ambitious without being verbose. His opening poem meditates on the role of the poet in history, and in this subject alone he has plenty of company among Greek writers like Cavafy and Ritsos. The texture of cultural allusion in some of these poems is quite rich, yet the book dispenses with footnotes and leaves us to find our own way. Most of the poems can be read as little dramas in which vital characters have everything at stake. " David Mason, The Hudson Review

»We are at a turning point in human history. To stop climate breakdown and extinction, environmental movements need to be actively anti-racist and join struggles for social justice.«Carola RacketeIn 2019, Carola Rackete became publicly known for docking the sea rescue vessel »Sea-Watch 3« in Italy and thereby challenging a nationaldecree that contradicted internationalobligations to engage in sea rescue. Due to this act of civil disobedience and her public confrontation of the Italian far right and the structural racism of the EU's Fortress Europe policy, Carola became a powerful symbol for people seeking to take practical action for a world based on justice and equality. Carola has worked in the polar regions since 2011 and holds a degree in natural resources management. Consequently, her book shows how the ecological crises we are facing today are rooted in social and political power structures. The book details moments of the rescue mission but also connects the dots to forced migration and the urgency of our environmental predicament. Overall, it is a call to engage and act to become part of initiatives and movements struggling for social and environmental justice. This version of the book includes a new afterword focused on centring justice and human rights in nature and biodiversity conservation-a topic often overlooked by climate activists in the Global North. The authors will donate the revenue from this book to the association borderline-europe-Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen e.V. in order to launch a new criminalization fund. The money from this fund will be used to support refugees who are criminalized in the EU for fleeingtoEurope.Acknowledgements: This audio book has been made possible by the voluntary contributions of many people, most notably Marysa Abbas who is the voiceover artist of this audioproject, Diane Hielscher who provided her studio "LifeX Lab-wir machen Medien für eine neue Welt" for the recordings and production, Céline Keller who contributed the cover art, Alfio Furnari from Borderline-Europe who managed administration and contracts, the management of liberaudio as well as Anne Weiss who got the projectrolling and connected everyone. My gratitude and thanks to all of you. Carola Rackete

Why is our society so unequal? Why, despite their small numbers, do the rich dominate policy and politics even in democratic countries? Why is it so difficult for working people to organize around common interests? How do we begin to build a more equal and democratic society?

Vivek Chibber provides a clear and accessible map of how capitalism works, how it limits the power of working and oppressed people, and how to overcome those limits. The capitalist economy generates incredible wealth but also injustice. Those who own the factories, hotels, and farms always have an advantage over the people who rely on that ownership class for their livelihoods. This inequality in power and income is reflected in the operation of the state, where capitalists are able to exert their will even under relatively democratic conditions. The most important reason is that states depend on the employment and profits from capitalist enterprise for both finances and legitimacy. Every meaningful victory for working people has been won through collective struggle but collective action is very difficult to coordinate. In the final section of the book, Chibber walks the listener through some of the historical attempts to build socialism and presents a vision of how we might, perhaps against the odds, build a socialist future.

America was built on white pine. From the 1600s through the Civil War and beyond, it was used to build the nation's ships and houses, barns, and bridges. Yet this popularity came at a cost: by the end of the nineteenth century, clear cutting had decimated much of America's white pine forests. In White Pine, ecologist and writer John Pastor takes listeners on walk through history, connecting the white pine forests that remain today to a legacy of destruction and renewal.

Since the clear-cutting era, naturalists, foresters, and scientists have taken up the quest to restore the great white pine forests. White Pine follows this centuries-long endeavor, illuminating how the efforts shaped Americans' understanding of key scientific ideas, from forest succession to the importance of fire. Pastor shows us why restoring the vitality of these forests has not been simple: a host of other creatures depend on white pine and white pine depends on them. In weaving together cultural and natural history, White Pine celebrates the way humans are connected to the forest—and to the larger natural world.

Today, white pine forests have begun to recover, but face the growing threat of climate change. White Pine shows us that hope for healthy forests lies in understanding the lessons of history, so that iconic species survives.

Liberia’s oligarchy: The beginning of the end.2019 Grand Prize Winner - Red City ReviewBased on the remarkable true account of a young American who landed in Liberia in 1961.The story weaves drama, dark comedy, and romance throughout a rich tapestry of narration - The San Francisco Book ReviewKEN VERRIER IS NOT HAPPY, NOR AT PEACE. He is experiencing the turbulence of Ishmael and the guilt of his brother's death. His sudden decision to drop out of college and deal with his demons shocks his family, his friends, and especially his girlfriend, soon to have been his fiancee. His destination: Liberia - The richest country in Africa both in monetary wealth and in natural resources.NOTHING COULD HAVE PREPARED HIM FOR THE EXPERIENCES HE WAS ABOUT TO LIVE THROUGH. Ken quickly realizes that he has arrived in a place where he understands very little of what is considered normal, where the dignity of life has little meaning, and where he can trust no one.Flying into the interior bush as a transport pilot, Ken learns quickly. He witnesses, first-hand, the disparate lives of the Liberian "Country People? and the "Congo People" also known as Americo-Liberians. These descendants of President Monroe's American Colonization Policy that sent freed slaves back to Africa in the 1800's have set up a strict hierarchical society not unlike the antebellum South.Author Dan Meier describes Ken's many escapades, spanning from horrifying to whimsical, with engaging and fast-moving narrative that ultimately describes a society upon which the wealthy are feeding and in which the poor are being buried. It's a novel that will stay with you long after the last word has been read.
