  Drawing on lessons from students and teachers in Chicago, The Color of Civics reimagines the democratic purpose of civic education. Nelsen's findings challenge some of the most widely cited civic education research, arguing that the content of traditional civic education courses privileges the political experiences of white political actors, and in turn, contributes to divergent political behaviors and participatory outcomes across racial and ethnic groups. He presents a new approach to civic education that aims to foster political empowerment by centering historically-grounded conversations about current events as well as critical categories of knowledge—those that highlight the agency of marginalized groups. This approach increases rates of political participation among young people of color and heightens political empathy among white youth. Nelsen also explores how the attitudes and lived experiences of teachers drive the implementation of more empowering civic learning environments.

  Katharine Ramsey lived from 1874 to 1960. Known as the "Red Duchess," in 1923 she became the first woman member from Scotland elected to the House of Commons. As a crusader against international cruelty, she spoke out against Stalin, Franco, and Hitler. The recording is from a 1929 speech. 
  Nancy Astor (May 19, 1879 - May 2, 1964) though born in Danville, Virginia, was the first woman to sit as a Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons. Known for her quick wit and often shark tongue, she remained an MP from November 28, 1919 through July 5, 1945. 
  Edith Clara Summerskill (April 19, 1901 - February 4, 1980) was a British physican, feminist, writer, and a Labour member of Parliament from 1938 to 1961. In addition to co-founding and acting as the first president of the Married Women's Association, she was a strong advocate for women's equal rights. 
  The recordings are dated from 1941.

  The Bengal Famine of 1943 was not an isolated event, but rather the culmination of years of political, economic, and environmental factors. To understand the tragedy that claimed the lives of millions, it is essential to examine the conditions that led to this devastating famine. 
  British colonial policies in India played a significant role in shaping the socio-economic landscape of Bengal. Under British rule, India’s agrarian economy was restructured to serve the needs of the colonial administration and its industrial empire. While the British extracted resources for their own benefit, they paid little attention to the welfare of the local population. In Bengal, a region heavily reliant on rice cultivation, this exploitation became increasingly evident as agricultural output was redirected to support the war effort, leaving the local population vulnerable to food shortages. 
  The economic strain caused by World War II exacerbated the situation in Bengal. As Britain sought to maintain its colonial empire, large quantities of rice were diverted from Bengal to support the war in the Pacific, where the Japanese threat loomed large. Additionally, the colonial government’s focus on military expenditure rather than economic development in India drained resources that could have been used for famine prevention and agricultural aid. This led to an economic imbalance, further disrupting food production and distribution in Bengal.

  When one thinks of the world’s first cities, Sumer, Memphis, and Babylon are some of the first to come to mind, but if the focus then shifts to India, then Harappa and Mohenjo-daro will likely come up. These cities owe their existence to India’s oldest civilization, known as the Indus Valley Civilization or the Harappan Civilization, which was contemporary with ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt and had extensive contacts with the former, making it one of the most important early civilizations in the world. 
  The dynasty that came to power in the late 4th century BCE is known today as the Mauryan Dynasty, and although the ruling family was short-lived and their power was ephemeral, its influence resonated for several subsequent centuries and spread as far east as China and into the Hellenistic west.  
  Bactria was the seat of several different kingdoms during the course of many centuries, but none were as successful as the Kushan Empire, the dominant political entity in Central Asia from the early 2nd century BCE until the early 3rd century CE, during which time the Kushan rulers played a major role in the first iteration of the trade networks known collectively as the Silk Road.
