LONGLISTED FOR THE 2023 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR POETRY "Where are you from . . . ? No—where are you from from?" It's a question every Asian American gets asked as part of an incessant chorus saying you'll never belong here, you're a perpetual foreigner, you'll always be seen as an alien, an object, or a threat. Monica Youn's From From brilliantly evokes the conflicted consciousness of deracination. If you have no core of "authenticity," no experience of your so-called homeland, how do you piece together an Asian American identity out of Westerners' ideas about Asians? Your sense of yourself is part stereotype, part aspiration, part guilt. In this dazzling collection, one sequence deconstructs the sounds and letters of the word "deracinations" to create a sonic landscape of micro- and macroaggressions, assimilation, and self-doubt. A kaleidoscopic personal essay explores the racial positioning of Asian Americans and the epidemic of anti-Asian hate. Several poems titled "Study of Two Figures" anatomize and dissect the Asian other: Midas the striving, nouveau-riche father; Dr. Seuss and the imaginary daughter Chrysanthemum-Pearl he invented while authoring his anti-Japanese propaganda campaign; Pasiphaë, mother of the minotaur, and Sado, the eighteenth-century Korean prince, both condemned to containers allegorical and actual.Mostra libro

In Open Mouths Sharan Hunjan presents a vision of a world simultaneously familiar and strikingly strange. The quotidian, the domestic, the commonplace are interrogated and manipulated through the poet's eye for detail, linguistic sense of play and restless imaginative and philosophical impulses. The shortcomings of language, the gulf between words and meaning, between experience and description, the space between translation, between places, between generations—these are the problems with which Hunjan grapples. Full of seemingly quiet, yet startlingly profound thought, razor-sharp wordplay, raw emotion and dazzling image and phrase-making, Open Mouths marks the emergence of another stellar talent from the 4 BROWN GIRLS WHO WRITE stable.Mostra libro
A compassionate and probing exploration of youth and aging, nostalgia and regret, and the dangers of refusing to get old. All children grow up, but what if they could grow back down again? A new medical process is being attempted, and it's got an extraordinary aim: attempting to 'de-age' its volunteers back into young children. The scientists don't know if it'll work. The doctors aren't sure if it should. And the friends and families of those undergoing the risky procedure can't understand why anybody would willingly do this in the first place… Why would you want to be small again? Holly Robinson's play small was first performed at Soho Theatre, London, in a production by Oxford School of Drama. The Nick Hern Books Multiplay Drama series features large-cast plays specifically written to be performed by and appeal to older teenagers and young adults.Mostra libro
When the worlds of science-fiction and science-fact collide… extraordinary things can happen. Dave is the great-great grandson of H.G. Wells, author of the 1895 novella The Time Machine, a book that foretold (with suspicious accuracy) the future of the human species. What if the ideas in that book weren't entirely fiction? Right now, Dave and his friends Amy and Michael must set out on a journey through time… the journey of a lifetime! The Time Machine: A Comedy is (very loosely) adapted from H.G. Wells by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, whose previous adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles was a hit in the West End and subsequently for numerous companies worldwide. It was first produced in 2023 on a tour of the UK, before a run at Park Theatre, London, produced by Original Theatre and directed by Orla O'Loughlin. Fast-paced and wise-cracking, this riotous retelling zips from the nineteenth century to the end of the world, and (with any luck) back again. It will suit any theatre company looking for a time-bending adaptation of a well-loved story – and a surefire audience-pleaser.Mostra libro
“Scribire iussit amor” Ovid (“Love compelled me to write”) As with most art, the words in this book were inspired by love. Inspired by women I have loved and one in particular, who I may have loved before. The woman who inspired many of these words is one of the very few truly spiritual people I’ve ever known. In spite of a life often tormented by cruelty and neglect, she retained a rare spirituality and compassion. She enriched my life and for that I will never forget her. These are some of the poems. Written over the past couple of years (something creative came out of the COVID lockdown). Some describe experiences and feelings directly related to my relationships and circumstances. Some figments of my imagination. This book is divided into three sections: Life, Love, and Loss You can start reading from the beginning through to the end, or you can pick a section depending on your mood, or dip in and out at random.
