  Neem Karoli Baba known to his followers as Maharaj-ji - was a great Hindu guru, mystic, and devotee of Lord Hanuman. He is very well known outside India for being the spiritual master of a number of prominent Americans who traveled to India in the 1960s and 70s, including spiritual teachers Ram Dass, Bhagavan Das, and musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. His ashrams are in India, and in Taos, New Mexico. Maharaji was a lifelong adept of bhakti-yoga and encouraged service to others (seva) as the highest form of unconditional devotion to God. 
   
  There can be no biography of him. Facts are few, stories many. He seems to have been known by different names in many parts of India, appearing and disappearing through the years. His non-Indian devotees of recent years knew him as Neem Karoli Baba, but mostly as “Maharajji” – a nickname so commonplace in India that one can often hear a tea vendor addressed thus. Just as he said, he was "nobody". He gave no discourses; the briefest, simplest stories were his teachings. Usually, he sat or lay on a wooden bench wrapped in a plaid blanket while a few devotees sat around him. Visitors came and went; they were given food, a few words, a nod, a pat on the head or back, and they were sent away. There was gossip and laughter for he loved to joke. Orders for running the ashram were given, usually in a piercing yell across the compound. Sometimes he sat in silence, absorbed in another world to which we could not follow, but bliss and peace poured down on us. Who he was was no more than the experience of him.   The following are the live recordings of William Butler Yeats reading and discussing the inspiration behind three of his most famous poems, "The Lake Island of Innisfree," "The Fiddler of Dooney," and "Song of the Old Mother." Yeats made these three recordings in 1932, 1934, and on October 28, 1937 when he was 72. 
   
  "The Lake Island of Innisfree" is a twelve-line poem comprising three quatrains, written in 1888 and first published in the National Observer in 1890. The poem is featured in Irish passports. "The Fiddler of Dooney" was first published in 1892. The word "Dooney" refers to Dooney Rock, a small hill overlooking Lough Gill near Sligo. The central theme of poem is the celebration of life and the joy that comes from living it to the fullest. "Song of the Old Mother" first appeared in The Wind Among the Reeds anthology, published in 1899. Written in first person, the poem echoes Yeats' fascination with the Irish peasantry, explaining the difficult chores and struggles of an aged, unfortunate woman.

  Slavic mythology is a rich and complex tradition that has been shaped by centuries of oral storytelling, cultural exchanges, and historical transformations. Unlike the more widely documented mythologies of the Greeks and Romans, Slavic myths were primarily passed down through oral tradition, making them fluid and ever-evolving. As a result, variations exist across different Slavic nations, yet common themes and figures remain central to the mythology as a whole.  
  The natural world played a crucial role in shaping Slavic beliefs. The Slavs were deeply tied to the cycles of the seasons, the power of the sun, and the mysteries of the forests and rivers. Deities like Perun, the god of thunder, and Veles, the god of the underworld, represented the dual forces of order and chaos, life and death. Forest spirits like the Leshy guarded the woods, while the Rusalka, eerie water nymphs, were believed to lure unsuspecting travelers to a watery grave. These myths not only explained the forces of nature but also provided a spiritual framework for daily life.  
  Storytelling was the primary means of preserving these myths. Legends were shared around fires, during village gatherings, and at seasonal festivals. Oral tradition allowed for constant reinterpretation, with each storyteller adding new details to fit the cultural and historical context of their time. Folklore heroes, such as Ilya Muromets and Dobrynya Nikitich, emerged as symbols of courage and perseverance, their tales reinforcing the values of strength, loyalty, and wisdom. These stories also carried moral lessons, cautioning against greed, deceit, and disrespect for the natural and supernatural world.
