Sinossi

Hidden Passages delves into the fascinating world beneath our feet, revealing the history of secret tunnels and subterranean realms across civilizations. These hidden spaces weren't just architectural quirks; they served critical roles in covert operations, escape routes, and even military strategy. Imagine entire networks built for clandestine purposes, reflecting the ingenuity and paranoia of societies facing threats. The book explores the construction, purpose, and discovery of these hidden passages, painting a vivid picture of their importance in historical events. From ancient civilizations to more modern eras, these passages have been instrumental in shaping history. Consider how secret tunnels provided escape routes for royalty or sanctuaries for persecuted groups, showcasing the resourcefulness of those seeking safety and security.

Hidden Passages takes a narrative non-fiction approach, blending factual information with compelling stories. The book starts by introducing the diverse types of hidden passages found worldwide and traces their origins. Subsequent chapters explore their strategic use in times of war, their function as escape routes, and how archaeologists today locate and preserve these fragile historical sites, offering readers a unique lens through which to view history.

For four centuries, the modern world has been dominated by machinery. It was born with capitalist production. It quickly became symbiotic with capitalist development, which found its driving force in mechanics. Calculation, predictability, the power of abstraction - the categories of modern science were well suited to this new mode of production, which was about to invade the planet. However, all trends that lead to the elimination of life in favor of the mechanical lead to a general commodification of human life and a loss of our being-in-the-world. Turning nature into a mere raw material, replacing vital processes with mechanical procedures - all this leads to treating human beings as things, turning them into predictable beings. We therefore need to think in terms of resistance to this movement. The involution of the great Enlightenment movement towards the formation of a techno-scientific steel cage poses the task of rediscovering a sense of nature and life, of rethinking rootedness beyond what Simone Weil had outlined, of remaking nature as a sphere of resonance.

Civil wars are the most common form of large-scale political violence. In the past thirty years, the study of civil wars has been one of the largest growing segments of the international relations field. Their causes are complex, ranging from fights over access to housing, jobs, and land or other resources, to political contests over offices, rights, and representation. Groups form, collapse, coalesce, align and realign, and then fight amongst themselves. Governments themselves change through elections, coups, military defeats, or revolutions. Understanding the origins of civil wars and their trajectories therefore demands some appreciation of the economic, political, social, cultural, and geographic order of societies. If there is one factor that best predicts why a civil war erupts, it is a prior civil war. That is why knowledge of a country's history of political violence, and associated narratives about who is to blame and why, are critical to understanding where a civil war might next occur. We now have a better understanding of the conditions under which civil wars generally emerge, how the fighting evolves, and how civil wars end. However, historical understanding—the human dimensions—remain every bit as critical. This book explores current debates on civil wars and how the reasons for fighting (and the nature of belligerents themselves) are changing.

Are taxi drivers in today's era of the ride-hail app performing care work akin to domestic and household labor? Julietta Hua and Kasturi Ray examine the case study of contemporary professional passenger driving in the United States. On the one hand, they show, the rise of the gig economy has brought new attention to the industry of professional passenger driving. On the other hand, the vulnerabilities that professional drivers experience remain hidden.

Drawing on interviews with drivers, labor organizers, and members of licensing commissions, as well as case law and other published resources, Hua and Ray argue that working for ride-hail companies like Uber and Lyft shares similarities with driving for taxi companies in the impact on driver lives. Reproductive labor—conventionally understood as feminized labor—is extracted, but masked, behind the masculinized, racialized bodies of drivers. Professional driving is thus best understood alongside domestic and other gendered service work as reproductive labors devalued and often demonetized to benefit the national economy.

Spent behind the Wheel is a must for listeners interested in critical studies of technological change and the gig economy, showing how drivers' capacities are drained for the benefit of riders, corporations, and the maintenance of the racial state.

Neil Gaiman is one of the most widely known writers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, having produced fiction and nonfiction, fantasy and horror, television, comics, and prose. He often attributes this eclecticism to his "compost heap" approach to writing, gathering inspiration from life, religion, literature, and mythology.

Readers love to sink into Gaiman's medieval worlds—but what makes them "medieval"? Shiloh Carroll offers an introduction to the idea of medievalism, how the literature and culture of the Middle Ages have been reinterpreted and repurposed over the centuries, and how the layers of interpretation have impacted Gaiman's own use of medieval material. She examines influences from Norse mythology and Beowulf to medieval romances and fairy tales in order to expand listeners' understanding and appreciation of Gaiman's work, as well as the rest of the medievalist films, TV shows, and books that are so popular today.
