Sinopse

The amazingly insightful, funny and brilliant record of Michael Palin's prime years as a member of the famed comedic group, Monty Python. “Charming and at times revelatory . . . A voice of (relative) sanity in the eye of a comedic storm, Palin paints so vivid a picture that the reader becomes a Python by proxy.” —The New York Times Book ReviewMichael Palin has kept a diary since newly married in the late 1960s, when he was beginning to make a name for himself as a TV scriptwriter, and Monty Python was just around the corner. This volume of his diaries reveals how Python emerged and triumphed, how he, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, the two Terrys—Jones and Gilliam—and Eric Idle came together and changed the face of British comedy. But this is only part of Palin’s story. Here, too, is his growing family, his home in a north London Victorian terrace, his solo effort as an actor, and his writing endeavors (often in partnership with Terry Jones) that produce Ripping Yarns and even a pantomime.Meanwhile Monty Python refuses to go away: his account of the making of both The Holy Grail and the Life of Brian movies are page-turners, and the sometimes extraordinary goings-on of the many powerful personalities who coalesced to form the Python team makes for funny and riveting reading.A perceptive and funny chronicle, the diaries are a rich portrait of a fascinating period.“It is terrifically good: funny, astute, and wonderfully written.” —The Boston Globe

One of the greatest marathon runners of all time, Tom Longboat was one of the best-known athletes of the western world in the early 20th century.

Longboat was an astonishing long-distance runner who grew up on the Six Nations reserve near Brantford, Ontario.

He won the Boston Marathon in record time, 2:24.24, almost five minutes faster than the 10 previous winners.

Longboat then raced in the Olympic Marathon in 1908, but he collapsed on the course amid rumours that his manager had drugged him with strychnine.

At a rematch the following year in New York City, Longboat won the race handily, beating his nearest competitor.

In 1916, Longboat enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and worked as a dispatch carrier for the 107th Pioneer Battalion in France.

He was left for dead on the battlefield, but somehow survived and returned to Canada only to discover that his wife, Lauretta, thinking he was dead, had remarried.

Longboat’s independent spirit and passion for running carried him through the many difficulties he faced as an Aboriginal person.

His enduring legacy has been honoured with the Tom Longboat Awards, established in 1951 to celebrate outstanding First Nations athletes in Canada.

He is a member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Indian Hall of Fame.

1990-2000: The Decade That Was House Music is a memoir-led journey through the records, rooms and rituals that shaped one person's relationship with 90s house culture.
House music did not begin in the 1990s, but for a generation of British teenagers, bedroom DJs, record buyers and clubbers, the decade was when it became impossible to ignore. Through taped Radio 1 broadcasts, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Muzik Magazine, Soundlab belt-drive decks, 1210s, Saturday record-shopping trips, local residencies, superclubs, Ibiza memories, white labels, compilation culture and the rise of the superstar DJ, James Bleakman traces the decade that turned a sound into an identity.
This is not a definitive history. It is a personal account of how house music moved from underground culture to global club language while still holding onto the feeling that mattered most: discovery, belonging, identity and the belief that the right record, in the right room, could change everything.
For anyone who remembers the 90s house era, wishes they had been there, or still believes records can carry whole chapters of a life, this book is a love letter to the decade that gave house music form.

A chilling journey through the corridors of power, Empire of Pain exposes the rise and fall of one of the most powerful families in American pharmaceutical history. At the heart of the opioid epidemic lies a dynasty that built an empire on pain—driven by ambition, protected by influence, and sustained by denial.
This gripping narrative unveils how a fortune was forged not just with innovation, but through manipulation of public trust, regulatory loopholes, and aggressive marketing. As addiction swept across the nation, the architects remained hidden behind boardroom walls and museum wings.

How to Steal a City - The Battle...

How to Steal a City is the gripping insider account of this intervention, which lays bare how Nelson Mandela Bay metro was bled dry by criminal syndicates, and how factional politics within the ruling party abetted that corruption.
As a former senior state official and local government ‘fixer’, Crispian Olver was no stranger to dodgy politicians and broken organisations. Yet what he found in Nelson Mandela Bay went far beyond rigged contracts, blatant conflicts of interest and garden-variety kickbacks. The city’s administration had evolved into a sophisticated web of front companies, criminal syndicates and compromised local politicians and officials. The metro was effectively controlled by a criminal network closely allied to a dominant local ANC faction. What Olver found was complete state capture – a microcosm of what has taken place in national government.
Olver and his team initiated a clean-up of the administration, clearing out corrupt officials and rebuilding public trust. Then came the ANC’s doomed campaign for the August 2016 local government elections. Having lost its way in factional battles and corruption, the divided party went down to a humiliating defeat in its traditional heartland.
Olver paid a high price for his work in Nelson Mandela Bay. Intense political pressure and even threats to his personal safety took a toll on his mental and physical health. When his political support was withdrawn, he had to flee the city as the forces stacked against him took their revenge. This is his story.
