While at Yale, Earl gained a new sense of pride and purpose as he connected with his black and African American heritage. This would continue throughout his studies and into graduate school at Harvard Law, where his calling to education—particularly that of black and brown children—came to life. Earl has dedicated his life to improving the access poor, black and brown children have to quality education and opportunities.

With searing honesty, McCormack lays bare his personal and professional ordeals, along with the lessons he’s drawn and continues to draw. Though his story is unique, his struggles are not; thus, McCormack’s narrative works its way into the heart of each of us. His take home, the one given to him by his mother on her deathbed, is clear. Staring into his eyes, she was emphatic: “Charlie. Have a good life. Have a good life.,” refusing to break her hold upon him until he finally committed, “I will, mom, I will, “ all the while thinking, “how the hell do I do that?” McCormack hopes that sharing his story through this book brings his readers insight and healing. 
  Mr. McCormack holds master's degrees in Psychology and Social Work. Since 1974, he has worked in in-patient psychiatric units, family violence, sexual abuse treatment, and SUDs treatment programs, and private practice. In 1988, he was named the Senior Social Worker of Adult Long-term Inpatient Services at Sheppard Pratt. His writings include “Treatment of the Borderline/Schizoid Couple,” "Treating Borderline States in Marriage," and "Essence" (memoir), awarded the Montaigne Medal for being the most thought-provoking of books. He was a long-term faculty member of the Washington School Psychiatry and Clinician of the Year (Maryland Society of Clinical Social Work). Long before social work embraced trauma-informed approaches, McCormack wrote about and trained social workers in ways of conceptualizing and humanizing work with individuals and couples impacted by major psychopathology. In 2023, McCormack was the recipient of the University of Maryland School of Social Work's Emeritus Award for contributions to the profession.

  In southern Iraq, a crushing silence hangs over the dunes. For nearly 5,000 years, the sands of the Iraqi desert have held the remains of the oldest known civilization: the Sumerians. When American archaeologists discovered a collection of cuneiform tablets in Iraq in the late 19th century, they were confronted with a language and a people who were at the time only scarcely known to even the most knowledgeable scholars of ancient Mesopotamia. The exploits and achievements of other Mesopotamian peoples, such as the Assyrians and Babylonians, were already known to a large segment of the population through the Old Testament and the nascent field of Near Eastern studies had unraveled the enigma of the Akkadian language that was widely used throughout the region in ancient times, but the discovery of the Sumerian tablets brought to light the existence of the Sumerian culture, which was the oldest of all the Mesopotamian cultures.  
  	Although the Sumerians continue to get second or even third billing compared to the Babylonians and Assyrians, perhaps because they never built an empire as great as the Assyrians or established a city as enduring and great as Babylon, they were the people who provided the template of civilization that all later Mesopotamians built upon. The Sumerians are credited with being the first people to invent writing, libraries, cities, and schools in Mesopotamia, and many would argue that they were the first people to create and do those things anywhere in world. Indeed, a close examination of Sumerian culture and chronology reveals that the Sumerians set the cultural tone in Mesopotamia for several centuries in the realms of politics/governments, arts, literature, and religion. The Sumerians were truly a great people whose legacy continued long after they were gone.
