Sinossi

"Power Coups" examines the volatile phenomenon of sudden government overthrows, delving into the preconditions, operational tactics, and diverse outcomes that characterize these events. Understanding power coups is crucial, as they often reshape political landscapes, ignite conflicts, and redefine international relations. The book explores how factors like economic grievances, social divisions, and the erosion of democratic institutions create environments ripe for upheaval. It also dissects strategies used by coup leaders, such as military mobilization and manipulation of public opinion.

The book distinguishes itself through a systematic analysis of both the micro-level tactics and the macro-level conditions shaping coups. For instance, the book highlights that the success of a coup isn't solely determined by force, but also by establishing legitimacy. Furthermore, the analysis draws from political science, history, sociology, and economics to provide a comprehensive understanding. Beginning with a definition and categorization of coups, the book progresses through historical context and case studies, offering a comparative perspective on regime change across diverse regions and political systems.

“With calm and compassionate power, Yasmine is helping us to find our way back home—back to our own selves.” —Layla Saad, New York Times bestselling author of Me & White Supremacy
“Yasmine’s work is monumental, and I am in much better holistic alignment because of her dedicated and helpful offerings to the world.”—Alex Elle, author of After the Rain
A radical approach to setting boundaries and protecting your energy, rich with tools for self-healing.
Imagine a glass jar filled with sugar on a kitchen counter. You are the jar, and the sugar is your energy. If the jar has no lid, people can come in and take as much sugar as they want. Sometimes, they spill that sugar all over. You may try to refill your jar—replenish your energy—through self-care, but because there is no a lid—no protective boundary—you cannot control how much of your vital life force is being drained.
The Sugar Jar metaphor is a powerful teaching tool that wellness advocate and coach Yasmine Cheyenne has successfully used with her clients. Now, in her debut book, she makes it available to everyone. Combining stories, exercises, and prompts, The Sugar Jar lets you see just how much energy you have and how much is being used by others. It helps you identify what depletes you, what restores you, and how to recognize destructive patterns. It empowers you to free yourself from performing for and serving others, teaching you to set boundaries to help you heal and recharge. The Sugar Jar frees you from the excess stress and exhaustion that wears you down. It allows you to unleash your authentic self, choose joy, and find lasting balance.
A compassionate teacher, Cheyenne offers a unique and much needed perspective. A former member of the Air Force working with victims of domestic violence, she has specifically designed her approach and questions about boundaries, self-care, and self-healing for readers of all backgrounds, and especially readers of color, whose stressors and life challenges have too often been excluded and overlooked. Cheyenne herself has felt unwelcome as a Black woman in predominantly white wellness groups and retreats. Her inclusive message speaks to the needs of BIPOC readers, and accepts them where they are.
Warm and honest, The Sugar Jar shows you how to make small adjustments that can lead to big changes in your life.

Mummification is one of the most fascinating and iconic aspects of ancient Egyptian culture. The practice, rooted in both religious beliefs and practical preservation techniques, developed over thousands of years. Understanding the origins of mummification requires a look into early burial practices, the evolution of the methods used, and the profound spiritual significance behind this ancient tradition.
In the Predynastic period, before the rise of the Pharaohs, ancient Egyptians buried their dead directly in the hot, dry desert sands. The natural arid conditions acted as a primitive form of preservation, desiccating the bodies and preventing decomposition. These simple burials, often in shallow pits, led to accidental mummification as the desert sands rapidly absorbed moisture. Early communities likely noticed that bodies buried in this way remained intact, sparking the realization that dryness was key to preservation.
As Egyptian society evolved, so did burial practices. The transition from pit burials to more elaborate tombs posed new challenges, as the enclosed environments led to faster decomposition. To counter this, early experiments with artificial preservation began. Initially, these efforts were rudimentary, involving simple wrappings and the use of resins. Over time, embalmers refined their techniques, experimenting with salts, oils, and various substances to dry and protect the body. By the Old Kingdom period, the practice had transformed into a highly ritualized and sophisticated process.

In We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For, one of the nation's preeminent scholars and a New York Times bestselling author, Eddie S. Glaude Jr., makes the case that the hard work of becoming a better person should be a critical feature of Black politics. Through virtuoso interpretations of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Ella Baker, Glaude shows how we have the power to be the heroes that our democracy so desperately requires.

Based on the Du Bois Lectures delivered at Harvard University, the book begins with Glaude's unease with the Obama years. He felt then, and does even more urgently now, that the excitement around the Obama presidency constrained our politics as we turned to yet another prophet-like figure. He examines his personal history and the traditions that both shape and overwhelm his own voice. Glaude weaves anecdotes about his evolving views on Black politics together with the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Dewey, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, and Ralph Ellison, encouraging us to reflect on the lessons of these great thinkers.

Narrated with passion and philosophical intensity, this book is a powerful reminder that if American democracy is to survive, we must step out from under the shadows of past giants to build a better society—one that derives its strength from the pew, not the pulpit.
