  The first critical book on “appropriate technology,” Developing to Scale shows how global health came to be understood as a problem to be solved with the right technical interventions. 
    
  In 1973, economist E. F. Schumacher published Small Is Beautiful, which introduced a mainstream audience to his theory of “appropriate technology”: the belief that international development projects in the Global South were most sustainable when they were small-scale, decentralized, and balanced between the traditional and the modern. His theory gained widespread appeal, as cuts to the foreign aid budget, the national interests of nations seeking greater independence, postcolonial activism, and the rise of the United States’ tech sector drove stakeholders across public and private institutions toward cheaper tools. In the ensuing decades, US foreign assistance shifted away from massive modernization projects, such as water treatment facilities, toward point-of-use technologies like village water pumps and oral rehydration salts. This transition toward the small scale had massive implications for the practice of global health. 
    
  Developing to Scale tells the history of appropriate technology in international health and development, relating the people, organizations, and events that shaped this consequential idea. Heidi Morefield examines how certain technologies have been defined as more or less “appropriate” for the Global South based on assumptions about gender, race, culture, and environment. Her study shows appropriate technology to be malleable, as different constituencies interpreted its ideas according to their own needs. She reveals how policymakers wielded this tool to both constrain aid to a scale that did not threaten Western interests and to scale the practice of global health through the development and distribution of technical interventions.

  For a period of 85 years, the M Street/Dunbar High School was an academically elite, all-black public high school in Washington, D.C.  As far back as 1899, its students came in first in citywide tests given in both black and white schools.  Over this 85-year span, approximately 80 percent of M Street/Dunbar’s graduates went on to college, even though most Americans, white or black, did not attend college at all. Faculty and students were mutually respectful to one another, and disruptions in the classroom were not tolerated. Yet, in this era of best practices, this public high school, whose founders experienced slavery and segregation firsthand, has received virtually no attention in the literature or in policy considerations for inner-city education.  The purpose of this study is to explore the history of a high school that was successful in teaching black children from families at all income levels to excel and to determine if the learning model employed in the past could be successful in a modern inner-city public education environment.

  "A Teenage Rhapsody 1966 to 1973" is autobiographical and describes my transition from adolescence to manhood at a time when the shackles of certain traditional social oppressions were been swept aside by optimism for a better future that previous generations were denied. 
  That better future started with the phenomenon called 'the teenager' who suddenly had a voice, a voice of freedoms, expression and of influence that helped create the Swinging Sixties. 
  I was there, yes I was there. What I was to experience growing up in the suburbs of Leeds at the time the book suggests, was that of hardship, laughter, fun, love and betrayal, juvenile violence and the explosion of alternatives that were now becoming accepted, as inevitable. 
  But also what I was experiencing, with the doctrine of Victorian values to keep me out of harm's way, was the freedom, without concern, to wander and explore for endless hours, the labyrinth of streets of back to back terrace houses that offered adventure around every corner. 
  The simplicity of life during the time of my teenage years, alongside a commonality of certain basic traditions passed down from generation to generation, that still apply and work regardless of generation. This was liberating, allowing me to develop my mind and character through trial and error at a pace of life that was less demanding and frenzied to what is to arrive in the next century, when all this description will be viewed in the format akin to a Sepia painting hanging with obscurity in a corner of a gallery. 
  This story had a need to be told.

  This is a book with 3 different topics, all related to the 18th and 19th century history of Germany. The topics are the following: 
  Otto von Bismarck: Otto, Prince of Bismarck, Count of Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of Lauenburg, was a conservative German statesman, diplomat, and author who was born Junker Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck. Bismarck supervised Germany's unification in 1871 and functioned as its first chancellor till 1890, throughout which time he ruled Europe for 20 years. 
  The Unification of Germany: The Unification of Germany had a significant impact on the whole country, the empire, and the decades after that. It was the inauguration for Germany into the 20th century, and the dreaded World War I and World War II that were partially consequences of that unification. 
  On January 18th, 1871, in the Palace of Versailles in France, Germany was lawfully merged into the German Empire, a Prussia-dominated country state with federal components. Throughout the Franco-Prussian War, princes of German countries assembled there to declare King Wilhelm I of Prussia Emperor of the German Empire. 
  The Weimar Republic: To summarize everything about this topic, the Weimar Republic was a disaster. Perhaps the setup of the republic wasn’t as much as fault as just the world events that led to the Great Depression, the eventual surrender of Germany to France, Russia, and England in World War I before that, and other significant changes in the economy at the time. 
  Do you want to buy a few eggs with thousands of marks? How about a loaf of bread for ten thousand dollars? The inflation in the Weimar Republic led to a severe economic downturn, one that had probably never been there ever before. This led to other problems, which also explained the rise of Nazi Germany somewhat later.
