Politically, imperialism was driven by the need for strategic dominance, with nations eager to expand their influence and prevent rivals from gaining power. Cultural and ideological motives, such as the belief in the superiority of one’s own civilization and the desire to “civilize” and Christianize indigenous peoples, were also significant driving forces behind imperial expansion. 
  The rise of modern imperialism coincided with the emergence of powerful European states, including Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, and later Germany and Italy, who sought to expand their empires across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

  In attempting to answer this question, Jeremy Horder draws a key distinction between what is called "political viewpoint" fraud and "electoral participation" fraud. In the interests of protecting freedom of speech, false or misleading claims (disinformation) involving political viewpoint content should be tolerated, not only by the criminal law but also by the internet platforms which host political content. By contrast, in the interests of preserving the integrity of democratic electoral processes, disinformation involving electoral participation information should be prohibited by the criminal law and censored by internet platforms. This book explains how the criminal law in various jurisdictions frequently prohibits false or misleading political claims falling into both categories of disinformation, instead of concentrating on electoral participation fraud.

Still fighting desperately, the Texans’ retreat was halted by cavalry, and afterward, Mexican lancers plied their trade with charges into the midst of the remaining resisters. Notoriously, Santa Anna burned the bodies of the Texans who had dared stand against him. But as this book proves in thorough detail, the funeral pyres were well outside the fort—where the two separate groups of escapees fell on the plain, rather than in the Alamo itself. "
