Sinossi

Absurd Traffic Laws explores the peculiar world of traffic regulations, revealing how historical accidents, political influence, and bureaucratic inertia have led to rules that often defy logic. Many seemingly nonsensical regulations, such as rules about animals crossing roads or outdated speed limits, stem from historical precedents enshrined in legal codes. Political dynamics also play a crucial role; lobbying efforts by various interest groups can result in inefficient or even dangerous traffic laws. The book argues that existing traffic regulations aren't always based on safety or fairness but are unintended consequences of various pressures. Once a law is passed, bureaucratic inertia makes it difficult to change.

The book progresses by first introducing traffic law's history and principles, then examining specific examples of absurd laws and their origins, structured around historical legacies, political influences, and bureaucratic processes. This analysis offers a unique perspective by combining historical insights with political commentary, providing practical recommendations for a more rational and effective transportation system. By understanding these underlying causes, readers can advocate for traffic law reform and contribute to a more equitable system.

  • The Notorious Edward Low - Pursuing the Last Great Villain of Piracy's Golden Age - cover

    The Notorious Edward Low -...

    Len Travers

Following the War of the Spanish Succession (1702–1713) a decade-long wave of sea-robbery plagued the Atlantic rim—often glamorized as the "Golden Age of Piracy". Boston-based laborer, Edward Low, left his mark on pirate history as the most vicious and sadistic raider of them all. Low's reputation, and those of other pirates, was crafted through newspapers and literature. Romanticized as anti-heroes and egalitarians in a monarchical world who had liberated themselves from the constraints of law and society ashore, these marauders came to enjoy an immortality bestowed upon them by generations of historians, novelists, and movie makers. That persistent gloss masks a more sordid reality.

Travers demonstrates that, feared as they certainly were, pirates were largely ordinary seamen trapped in desperate circumstances who, in the end, had little to show for their efforts. Contrary to popular portrayals, for pirates it was a time of radically diminishing returns, scant treasure, and increasingly successful suppression by state authorities. The Notorious Edward Low puts individual actors, from colonial governors to captains to common seamen, at center stage, and reveals how British authorities used new anti-piracy laws to reclaim authority over their fractious North American colonies—a compelling story with its own brand of true-life swashbuckling on the high seas.

    Language and Writing in Ancient...

Along with Egypt, the cultural and geographic region known as Mesopotamia was home to some of the world’s earliest civilizations and also the first known form of writing, cuneiform. Many different ethnic groups vied for power in ancient Mesopotamia over the course of antiquity, spanning about 3,000 years, and many of them spoke different languages. Despite these differences, the people in Mesopotamia shared many cultural attributes, including similar religious practices, a common art and architecture style, and a shared use of the cuneiform script.
As this suggests, language and writing were different but also interconnected. The languages spoken by the peoples of Mesopotamia were as diverse as the many ethnic groups, but as those groups asserted their military, economic, and cultural power over the other groups, two languages became dominant in the region: Sumerian and Akkadian. These were the two languages that were primarily used by the people of Mesopotamia to record their myths, religious rituals, government records, and historiographical accounts.
Indeed, the languages and written scripts of Mesopotamia were not just enduring over time in the region, but they also had wide geographic influence, much more than any language groups or scripts at the time. The Sumerian language continued to be learned by scribes throughout Mesopotamia centuries after it had become a “dead language,” and the Akkadian language eventually became the lingua franca of the Near East by the Late Bronze Age. Akkadian became the language of diplomacy and trade, while cuneiform was used to record agreements in Akkadian between the "Great Powers” of the era. Cuneiform was also adopted by people outside of Mesopotamia, such as the Hittites and Elamites, who modified the script to fit the lexicons and rules of grammar for their own languages.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
This book offers a vivid, ground-level narrative of how the Ottoman Empire navigated two turbulent centuries of war, diplomacy, and reinvention. From the Treaty of Zsitvatorok to the French invasion of Egypt, this book follows shifting frontiers in the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Arab provinces; the rise of provincial notables; the transformation of the Janissaries; the monetized pressures of silver and global trade; the aesthetics and politics of the Tulip Period; and the Empire’s steadily sharpening view of Europe. It explores how Russia and Austria surged, how forts and bridges became social institutions, how markets whispered the first warnings of defeat and recovery, and how knowledge—maps, manuals, and newspapers—turned into instruments of power. Bringing cities, soldiers, scholars, and merchants to life, the book reframes “decline” as an intense school of adaptation that culminated in the shock of 1798 Egypt—an ending that seeded the next Ottoman century of reforms.
