  In Subversive Habits, Shannen Dee Williams provides the first full history of Black Catholic nuns in the United States, hailing them as the forgotten prophets of Catholicism and democracy. Drawing on oral histories and previously sealed Church records, Williams demonstrates how master narratives of women's religious life and Catholic commitments to racial and gender justice fundamentally change when the lives and experiences of African American nuns are taken seriously. For Black Catholic women and girls, embracing the celibate religious state constituted a radical act of resistance to white supremacy and the sexual terrorism built into chattel slavery and segregation. Williams shows how Black sisters—such as Sister Mary Antona Ebo, who was the only Black member of the inaugural delegation of Catholic sisters to travel to Selma, Alabama, and join the Black voting rights marches of 1965—were pioneering religious leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, desegregation foot soldiers, Black Power activists, and womanist theologians. In the process, Williams calls attention to Catholic women's religious life as a stronghold of white supremacy and racial segregation—and thus an important battleground in the long African American freedom struggle.

  Andrew Jackson was an American attorney, soldier, and statesman who acted as the seventh president of the U.S. from 1829 to 1837. Jackson rose to prominence as a basic in the US Army and served in both homes of Congress before being chosen to the presidency. 
  Jackson, an expansionist president, defended the rights of the "commoner" and the Union against a "corrupt upper class." 
  Jackson ended up being a frontier attorney and married Rachel Donelson Robards after being born in the settler Carolinas an entire decade before the American Revolutionary War. He belonged to the US Legislature and the US Senate from Tennessee for a brief time. After giving up, he served on the Tennessee Supreme Court as a justice from 1798 till 1804. 
  Jackson ended up being a rich, slave-owning planter after buying a residential or commercial property referred to as The Hermitage. In the year 1801, he was selected colonel of the Tennessee militia, and the following year, he was chosen its leader. Throughout the Creek War of 1813 to 1814, he led forces to success in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

  Why originalism is a flawed, incoherent, and dangerously ideological method of constitutional interpretation 
   
   
   
  Originalism, the view that the meaning of a constitutional provision is fixed when it is adopted, was once the fringe theory of a few extremely conservative legal scholars but is now a well-accepted mode of constitutional interpretation. Three of the Supreme Court's nine justices explicitly embrace the originalist approach, as do increasing numbers of judges in the lower courts. 
   
   
    
  Noted legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky gives a comprehensive analysis of the problems that make originalism unworkable as a method of constitutional interpretation. He argues that the framers themselves never intended constitutional interpretation to be inflexible and shows how it is often impossible to know what the "original intent" of any particular provision was. Perhaps worst of all, though its supporters tout it as a politically neutral and objective method, originalist interpretation tends to disappear when its results fail to conform to modern conservative ideology.
