Argentina's history is a rich tapestry that can be divided into four distinct periods: the pre-Columbian or early history (up to the sixteenth century), the colonial period (1530–1810), the nation-building period (1810–1880), and contemporary history (from approximately 1880 to the present). Each phase shaped the region, transforming it from sparsely inhabited land into the modern Argentine Republic.
Human presence in what is now Argentina dates back approximately 13,000 years, with evidence of early settlements in Patagonia. Archaeological findings suggest human activity through the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods. However, a significant depopulation of large interior areas occurred between 4000 and 2000 B.C., likely due to a prolonged period of drought. Over time, indigenous peoples in the region evolved into diverse cultural groups with varying levels of complexity.
Uruguayan archaeologist Raúl Campá Soler categorized Argentina’s indigenous peoples into three groups: basic hunters and food gatherers without pottery; advanced gatherers and hunters; and basic farmers who developed pottery. The Pampas and Patagonia were dominated by the first group, while the second included tribes like the Charrúa, Minuane, and Guaraní. The third group, inhabiting regions such as the Quebrada de Humahuaca, adopted farming practices and pottery.

The hilarious and endearing true tale of two urban Americans who escaped to a tiny olive farm in rural New Zealand.
For Jared Gulian, leaving the United States and coming to tiny Wellington, New Zealand, was a big enough switch from the bright lights of big cities. So when his partner CJ decided they just had to buy a rundown olive grove in the Wairarapa Valley, it was almost too much to cope with.
First they'd have to drive over the dangerous Remutaka ranges to get there, and Jared was terrified of heights. Then they'd have to figure out what on earth you do with 500 olive trees that hadn't been pruned for years, a geriatric rooster, warring hens, an obese kunekune pig, cast sheep, marauding cattle, and understanding your neighbors when they said "yiece" but meant "yes."
In this delightful memoir, Jared Gulian describes the first four years of their new life in the country, its disasters and small triumphs, its surprises and pleasures. But most of all he describes the warmth of the local community that welcomed them, saved them from certain peril, taught them how to cook, how to care for animals, and how to understand and love the land.
If you love Peter Mayle, David Sedaris, Frances Mayes, or James Herriot, this charming adventure is for you.

With the quick wit and dry humour of a true Irishman, David "Irish" Anderson documents his epic eighteen-month motorcycle adventure from Ireland to South Africa in this captivating memoir.
What begins as a lofty idea in a pub becomes a reality after six years of planning when Irish and his wife purposefully set out with their two heavily loaded motorcycles. Somewhere along the way, Irish loses his wife, but amidst the heartbreak, turmoil, and challenges on the long and often bumpy road, he gains a whole new perspective on life.
Follow his exciting journey as he does what you're absolutely not supposed to do when you see and elephant, involuntarily exfoliates himself during a desert sandstorm, and receives plenty of well-meaning but impractical advice from strange characters.
With a telling eye for detail, Irish artfully captures the characteristics of each country he visits, the encounters with people he meets, the difficulties he faces, and the joy of discovery that comes with travelling to unfamiliar places, providing the listener with a rich tapestry of experience.

Train travel is having a renaissance. Grand old routes that had been canceled, or were moldering in neglect, have been refurbished as destinations in themselves. The Rocky Mountaineer, the Orient Express, and the Trans-Siberian Railroad run again in all their glory.

Pamela Mulloy has always loved train travel. Whether returning to the Maritimes every year with her daughter on the Ocean, or taking her family across Europe to Poland, trains have been a linchpin of her life. As COVID locked us down, Mulloy began an imaginary journey that recalled the trips she has taken, as well as those of others. Whether it was Mary Wollstonecraft traveling alone to Sweden in the late 1700s, or the incident that had Charles Dickens forever fearful of trains, or the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt trapped in her carriage in a midwestern blizzard in the 1890s, or Sir John A. Macdonald’s wife daring to cross the Rockies tied to the cowcatcher at the front of the train, the stories explore the odd mix of adventure and contemplation that travel permits.

Thoughtful, observant, and fun, Off the Tracks is the perfect blend of research and personal experience that, like a good train ride, will whisk you into another world.
