The first volume in a collection essays and journalism from the legendary politician and Nobel Prize–winning author explores his artistic pursuits.   Legendary politician and military strategist Winston S. Churchill was a master not only of the battlefield, but of the page and the podium. Over the course of forty books and countless speeches, broadcasts, news items and more, he addressed a country at war and at peace, thrilling with victory but uneasy with its shifting role on the global stage. In 1953, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.” During his lifetime, he enthralled readers and brought crowds roaring to their feet; in the years since his death, his skilled writing has inspired generations of eager history buffs.   Best known for his political genius and keen eye for military tactics, Churchill was a man of many talents—not the least of which was painting. Throughout his life, Churchill painted to relieve his mind from the demands of leadership and to keep the “black dog” of depression at bay.   Included in this volume are Churchill’s meditations on painting as a salve for the spirit and an essential creative pursuit. His love for the craft comes to life in this concise yet impassioned work. This volume includes eighteen reprints of Churchill’s original work in oil, giving the reader a window into the little-known creative and artistic skill of this prominent figure in twentieth century history.

A chronicle of the Chinese contemporary artist’s interactive piece on prisoners of conscience, human rights, and the power of art and letter writing. Internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei works at the intersection of art and politics. In 2014, he created @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz, an exhibition that engaged nearly 900,000 visitors in a conversation about human rights and freedom of expression. One of the artworks included was Yours Truly. This installation invited visitors to write postcards to prisoners of conscience around the world. On pre-addressed cards depicting the national birds and flowers of the countries where each prisoner was held, visitors wrote messages of hope, humor, and solidarity. In total, 92,829 postcards were written and sent. Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly delves into this astonishing project and invites you to engage with a work of art and a cause. Essays and a statement from the artists himself give a wider artistic and political context. In candid and heartfelt testimonials, five former prisoners and their loved ones—Ahmed Maher, Irom Sharmila Chanu, John Kiriakou, Chelsea Manning, and the family of Ebrahim Sharif Al Sayed—reflect on experiences of activism and detainment, and share the impact of receiving hundreds of postcards from people they would never meet. And photographs from the exhibition show the ordinary people who participated in the projects and some of the messages they wrote. This book is a visually stunning document, an inspiring call-to-arms, and a testament to the power of art to transform lives.

"Christopher Columbus and the Afrikan Holocaust," by John Henrik Clarke, shatters the hero's-journey narrative surrounding Columbus, exposing him as an architect of exploitation. The book recasts the "discovery" of America as a brutal invasion, paving the way for centuries of Indigenous suffering and laying the groundwork for the African Holocaust – the transatlantic slave trade.

Clarke argues that neither Indigenous nor African subjugation was incidental. Instead, they were calculated moves fueled by insatiable European greed. The book deconstructs the myth of benevolent colonization, revealing its core as a resource-hungry machine reliant on forced labor and extraction. This system, christened "European capitalism," thrived on the dehumanization and exploitation of entire populations.

Clarke doesn't merely paint a grim picture; he also illuminates resistance. He highlights the agency of colonized peoples, their unwavering fight for freedom despite unimaginable suffering. This Pan-Africanist perspective weaves together the struggles of both Indigenous and African peoples, demonstrating the interconnectedness of global oppression.

Beyond historical analysis, the book serves as a potent call to action. Clarke urges readers to confront the legacies of colonialism and slavery, dismantling the very systems that perpetuate inequality. He doesn't shy away from uncomfortable truths, demanding critical examination of narratives that continue to shape our understanding of the world.

This book is not for the faint of heart. It confronts sensitive historical events with unflinching honesty, potentially exposing readers to disturbing descriptions of violence and oppression. Yet, through its unflinching analysis and unwavering call for justice, "Christopher Columbus and the Afrikan Holocaust" offers a crucial roadmap for navigating the complex legacies of the past and building a more equitable future.
