The big man at the window, as though fascinated by the flood of light within the room, remained for a long time staring. Finally he turned, and instantly he grappled with the smaller shadow behind him.“It is I!” whispered the Cheyenne hastily. “It is Standing Antelope. Take your hand from my throat, Thunder Moon!”He was free, and the two slipped silently through the garden, through the hedges, and back into the adjoining woods where they had left their four horses.“I, also, have seen,” said the boy.“What?” asked the other.“I have seen the reason that brought you from the Suhtai and made you travel all these moons into the land of the white men. I have seen his face!”“You have seen him? Then who is he, Standing Antelope?”

'I had rather die in the adventure of noble achievements, than live in obscure and sluggish security.'

Part romance, part adventure story, The Blazing World is a seventeenth century classic, and a prime example of proto-science fiction.

Often considered an early feminist work, Cavendish compellingly chronicles how a young Lady became a powerful empress of a fantastical parallel kingdom. Captured by a lustful merchant in the hope of marrying the young woman, we first find our protagonist travelling towards the North Pole, unsure of her future. But soon the merchant and his crew freeze to death, allowing the young Lady to escape and discover a pole to an alternative land: the Blazing World. Here, the laws of science and nature are upturned: peculiar hybrid creatures – with animal bodies but minds like humans – inhabit the kingdom. Believed to be a goddess by the Emperor of Paradise city, the young woman soon becomes betrothed to the leader of the strange land, and is able to rule and govern the world as she pleases. This audiobook edition is brilliantly brought to life by Karen Cass.
Margaret Cavendish (1632 – 1673), Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was a successful poet, playwright, scientist and philosopher. She was one of the first women of her time to publish extensively under her own name, and used her work to explore topics such as gender, marriage and courtship.

Widowed Arabella Northwick went from the home of a father who didn’t love her to the home of a husband who didn’t love her. It would seem at last she was on the cusp of forging a happier future for her baby and herself, were it not for her dead husband’s brother, who is determined to keep them captive. Theo Dawson was born and bred into the textile industry. He has never wished to inherit the mill and run it, but as the eldest son, no other choice presents itself. He might be able to resign himself to a life of duty rather than happiness were it not for the beautiful, widowed Mrs. Northwick, who is coming to mean every bit as much to him as fulfilling his duties. With a wicked brother-in-law keeping a tight rein on Arabella and swearing she will lose her son if she marries, and problems at the mill that prevent Theo from any hope of passing it on to his younger brother, the two hopeless lovers have arrived at point non plus. What they will need to overcome—their only chance, in fact—is a stroke of good fortune.

“To live forever... and long for death.”
What begins as a desperate act of heartbreak turns into an eternal sentence in this haunting short tale by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the famed author of Frankenstein. When young Winzy drinks a mysterious elixir meant to cure the torment of love, he unwittingly trades fleeting pain for everlasting regret.
Blessed—or cursed—with youth that never fades, Winzy watches the world age around him. Love, joy, grief, and time twist into a tragic knot of memories as centuries slip by and those he cherishes wither and pass.
The Mortal Immortal is a chilling meditation on desire, mortality, and the heavy burden of immortality. In a world where everything changes but him, Winzy’s greatest question remains unanswered: Is he truly immortal… or merely doomed to wait for death forever?
Narrated with intimate melancholy by Christopher Mireider, this gothic classic remains as resonant today as when it was first penned.
