  World War II was the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind. This book follows military operations of the US Army in Normandy from 6 June to 24 July 1944. 
  A great invasion force stood off the Normandy coast of France as dawn broke on 6 June 1944: 9 battleships, 23 cruisers, 104 destroyers, and 71 large landing craft of various descriptions as well as troop transports, minesweepers, and merchantmen—in all, nearly 5,000 ships of every type. The naval bombardment that began at 0550 that morning detonated large minefields along the shoreline and destroyed a number of the enemy's defensive positions. To one correspondent, reporting from the deck of the cruiser HMS Hillary, it sounded like "the rhythmic beating of a gigantic drum" all along the coast. In the hours following the bombardment, more than 100,000 fighting men swept ashore to begin one of the epic assaults of history, a "mighty endeavor," as President Franklin D. Roosevelt described it to the American people, "to preserve . . . our civilization and to set free a suffering humanity."
  The attack had been long in coming. From the moment British forces had been forced to withdraw from France in 1940 in the face of an overwhelming German onslaught, planners had plotted a return to the Continent. Only in that way would the Allies be able to confront the enemy's power on the ground, liberate northwestern Europe, and put an end to the Nazi regime...

  Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War, marveling at the size of the battles, the leadership of the generals, and the courage of the soldiers. Since the war's start over 150 years ago, the battles have been subjected to endless debate among historians and the generals themselves. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, and had the two sides realized it would take four years and inflict over a million casualties, it might not have been fought. Since it did, however, historians and history buffs alike have been studying and analyzing the biggest battles ever since.  
  In September 1862, the Union had no intelligence service worthy of the name. It had detectives, scouts, scattered networks of informants, balloons, signal flags, and a great deal of luck, but the federal government did not have a coordinated system, to the extent that military commanders did not know enemy troop strength. In fact, General George McClellan spent most of his time in command of the Army of the Potomac dramatically overestimating the size of Robert E. Lee's Confederate army in front of him, and it would inform how he fought at Antietam on September 17, 1862. At that battle, McClellan believed Lee outnumbered him because his intelligence chief, Allan Pinkerton, had told him so. 
  	By the end of the war, the Union would be running the most sophisticated intelligence operations in American history to that point. The government eventually forged an integrated, all-source, professional service that fed the commanding generals daily reports on enemy strength, disposition, morale, and intent. The Union also successfully maintained a network of spies inside the Confederate capital that intercepted enemy signal traffic; read Southern newspapers for what the editors had let slip, and used escaped slaves as sources of intelligence and treated their testimony as it deserved to be treated.

  Great Sierra Waters The Eastern...

  Great Sierra Waters, the Eastern Slope is a definitive study of the Truckee River but also includes the Owens and the East Walker.  It's a serious fly-fishing book that shows you how to fish these rivers, what to use as far as fly patterns, and how to tie them for your greatest success. In addition to the fishing information which represents 60 years of fishing knowledge by the author, it details the plight of the Lahontan Cutthroat that has existed in the Truckee River drainage for 10 million years. This drainage runs from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake and the Cutthroats have been famous since the 1930's when fishermen flocked from all over the world to fish for them.  
  In the last twenty years the original strain was found in a few tributaries in the Pilot Peak range of north central Nevada. They have taken hold again in Pyramid Lake and fish in excess of 30 pounds are currently available and they're running up the Truckee to spawn.  The demise of the Truckee began with the building of Derby Dam in the early 1900s.  The last great spawning run occurred in 1938, and the average fish weighed 18 1/2 pounds.  The last great Cutthroat trout was caught in 1949 in downtown Reno, Nevada and weighed twenty-two pounds and ten ounces.  
  As a boy, author Terry Courtright fished it constantly from the time he was 10 years old until he left for college.  He later came back and wrote outdoor columns about fly fishing the Truckee, then moved back to Montana to fish all of the great waters in the West.  As we speak, there is a great resurgence of interest in recovering this fish in this fishery and Courtright's last chapter on this book called The Restoration of the Lahontan Cutthroat brings to light the most sophisticated and workable fisheries plan that has ever been developed.  Great Sierra Waters is a welcome and timely addition to knowledge of the trout fisheries everywhere.
