Sinossi

Peer Learning Insights explores the power of collaborative and peer learning to improve educational outcomes. The book investigates how structured interaction and shared knowledge construction can enhance understanding and critical thinking. Social learning theories, like those of Albert Bandura, highlight the importance of observation and modeling in the learning process, emphasizing reciprocal determinism.

Group dynamics, including cohesion and conflict resolution, significantly impact collaborative outcomes, as explored through social psychology. This book uniquely integrates theory and practice, providing educators and trainers with a guide to harness collaborative learning.

The book begins by introducing core concepts, then delves into designing effective peer learning activities, including strategies for forming diverse groups and structuring tasks. It also examines the instructor's role in facilitating peer learning and creating a supportive classroom climate. Real-world case studies and examples from various educational settings offer practical guidance.

The approach balances academic rigor with practical application, making complex concepts accessible. The book progresses from the theoretical underpinnings of peer learning to practical strategies and real-world examples, offering a comprehensive guide for educators seeking to implement and evaluate collaborative learning activities. This structured approach ensures readers gain both a deep understanding of peer learning principles and the tools to apply them effectively in diverse educational settings.

Conflicts have accompanied mankind since time immemorial, and for almost as long people have been trying to limit and deal with them – whether as those affected by them or as professionals with more or less success. For once a system of conflict has developed, once negative expectation structures and with them negative self-evident truths and inherent laws have developed, it becomes increasingly difficult for those involved to escape them: The complexity of our social world, in which it is not easy for communication to find its way, remains unseen. A violated sense of justice, misunderstandings and unfortunate attempts to correct them alternate. One begins to attribute the causes of the conflict to the "person" ("It's you! It's your fault!") and to attribute negative motives to the conflict partner ("You're only doing this because ...!"), who in turn does the same – just like a carousel that slowly gets going. A number of well-studied but little-known psychological processes occur within us when we are in conflict. Outrage at the other person grows, usually unfortunately on both sides. Slowly, the "carousel of outrage and indignation" begins to spin - faster and faster, until...
The book places the various psychological mechanisms in the context of a systemic understanding of conflict and explains ways to slow down the carousel.

The term "emerging market" refers to a country where incomes are currently low but that is likely to experience rapid growth and increasing economic competitiveness. Yet many of the characteristics of emerging markets—including demographic shifts, rising educational attainment, and growing urbanization—are also found closer to home, in communities that have been underserved by the existing financial-services system.

Gregory Fairchild introduces listeners to the rising set of entrepreneurs whose efforts to reach marginalized groups are reshaping the emerging markets of the United States. He explores how minority-owned and community-development institutions are achieving innovations in consumer- and small-business-targeted financial services to further economic development and reduce inequality. He analyzes the models of these organizations, measures their successes and failures, and provides suggestions for sustainable growth of similar organizations. Bringing together quantitative research, powerful stories of real-world entrepreneurs, and nuanced insights on public policy, Emerging Domestic Markets offers a vital set of prescriptions for inclusive financial development.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, when Western Europe was governed by a Germanic warrior-caste, the theory of a just and virtuous war took root. The Roman Church enhanced its authority by sanctifying oaths taken for just military purposes, and Bishop Anselm of Lucca (d. 1086) was the first to suggest that military action for the cause of religion could remit sin. At the Council of Clermont in July 1095, Pope Urban II canonized religious war by urging Western Europe's nobility to take up arms in defense of the Byzantine Empire against the Muslims, thus launching the Crusades. Religious military orders such as the Knights of Saint John, the Templars, and the Hospitallers arose, ostensibly founded to protect the weak and the sick but also to extend the boundaries of Christianity and the power of the Church. In Europe, the knight, originally a mounted warrior, became a consecrated soldier of Christ, dedicated to the defense of the Church by solemn vows made before an altar.
Naturally, the question remained concerning the use of arms against other Christians. Eastern Christians did not acknowledge the Pope's supremacy, and many held that it was lawful for him to declare a crusade to bring schismatics back to the obedience of Rome. German knights fighting the Orthodox Russians at the Battle on the Ice in 1242 believed this, as did the Hungarian prosecutors of the 1235 invasion of Bosnia, which was thinly disguised as a crusade. The Church even extended the object of crusade to believers in communion with Rome, who refused to obey lawful authority. After peasants revolted against the Prince-Archbishop of Bremen in 1204 over tithes and land rights, Pope Gregory IX was persuaded to declare them heretics and proclaim a crusade against them.
