Sinossi

In her groundbreaking work, "The Sex Side of Life," Mary Ware Dennett navigates the often-taboo subject of sexuality with a refreshing blend of straightforwardness and scholarly inquiry. Written in an accessible style, the book amalgamates scientific research, personal anecdotes, and societal critiques, challenging the prevailing moralistic views of early 20th-century America. Dennett not only elucidates the biological and psychological components of human sexuality but also advocates for sexual health education, underscoring its essential role in personal and societal well-being. Her writing not only informs but also stirs the conscience, encouraging readers to rethink their attitudes toward sex and intimacy. Mary Ware Dennett was a prominent advocate for social reform, a suffragist, and a pioneering figure in the birth control movement. Her experiences as a mother and her engagement in feminist causes prompted her to address the widespread misinformation surrounding sexual health. The frustrations she faced in discussions about women's reproductive rights and sexual autonomy fueled her desire to educate and empower others, making this work not only timely but also deeply personal. For readers seeking a comprehensive and candid exploration of human sexuality, Dennett's "The Sex Side of Life" is an indispensable resource. It challenges outdated perceptions and invites a more enlightened understanding, making it a must-read for anyone interested in the intersections of sexuality, health, and social justice.

The epistle is attributed to Paul the Apostle and a co-author, Sosthenes, and is addressed to the Christian church in Corinth. Scholars believe that Sosthenes was the amanuensis who wrote down the text of the letter at Paul's direction. It addresses various issues that had arisen in the Christian community at Corinth, and is composed in a form of Koine Greek.

Thomas Modly had an eclectic career in the military, academia, business, and government when he answered the call to service in 2017 and returned to the Navy where his career began. His experience, as chronicled in these pages, tells the story of Secretary Modly’s quest to advance the Department of the Navy’s preparedness for the challenges of this century. As Acting Secretary of the Navy he held fast to the mantra of “acting, not pretending,” and thus advocated aggressively for the Navy and Marine Corps’ future — a future he believed would be defined by uncertainty and unpredictability. Every Friday he wrote a personal message to the entire Department regardless of rank. Those messages were called SECNAV Vectors. Each Vector was intended to clearly communicate his priorities and to establish a rapport with all levels of the organization. The subject of each Vector was inspired by real events that occurred in real time. As these events unfolded , the Secretary’s unyielding emphasis on being prepared for unpredictable events are proven to be prescient as the Navy found itself, unintentionally, in the center of COVID-19 crisis.

NAACP Image Award Nominee · NPR Best Book of 2022
A searing memoir of American racism from a Somalian-American who survived hardships in his birth country only to experience firsthand the dehumanization of Blacks in his adopted land, the United States.
“No one told me about America.”
Born in Somalia and raised in a valley among nomads, Boyah Farah grew up with a code of male bravado that helped him survive deprivation, disease, and civil war. Arriving in America, he believed that the code that had saved him would help him succeed in this new country. But instead of safety and freedom, Boyah found systemic racism, police brutality, and intense prejudice in all areas of life, including the workplace. He learned firsthand not only what it meant to be an African in America, but what it means to be African American. The code of masculinity that shaped generations of men in his family could not prepare Farah for the painful realities of life in the United States.
Lyrical yet unsparing, America Made Me a Black Man is the first book-length examination of American racism from an African outsider’s perspective. With a singular poetic voice brimming with imagery, Boyah challenges us to face difficult truths about the destructive forces that threaten Black lives and attempts to heal a fracture in Black men’s identity.

From the award-winning Native American literary writer Diane Glancy comes a book about travel, belonging, and home. Travel is not merely a means to bring us from one location to another. "My sense of place is in the moving," Glancy writes. For her the road is home—its own satisfying destination. But the road also makes demands on us: asking us to be willing to explore the incomprehensible parts of the landscapes we inhabit and pass through—as well as to, ultimately, let them blur as they go by. This, Glancy says, is home.

Glancy teases out the lessons of the road that are never easy to define, grappling with her own: childhood's puzzle pieces of her Cherokee heritage and a fraught but still compelling vision of Christianity. As she clocks an inordinate amount of driving, as she experiments with literary forms, she looks to what the land has held for centuries, before the roads were ever there.

This, ultimately, is a book about land, tradition, religion, questions, and the puzzle pieces none of us can put together quite right. It's a book about peripheral vision, conflicting narratives, and a longing for travel.

Hindu mythology is one of the oldest and most complex religious traditions in the world. With a vast pantheon of gods, goddesses, and celestial beings, it weaves together myths, legends, and philosophical concepts that have shaped the spiritual landscape of India for thousands of years. Unlike many monotheistic traditions, Hinduism does not center around a single deity but instead embraces a diverse array of divine figures, each representing different aspects of existence. These deities are not merely supernatural beings but embodiments of cosmic principles, making Hindu mythology a unique fusion of religion, philosophy, and storytelling.

The foundation of Hindu mythology lies in its sacred texts, particularly the Vedas and Puranas. The Vedas, composed over 3,000 years ago, contain hymns and rituals dedicated to early Vedic deities, forming the spiritual bedrock of Hindu belief. The Puranas, written centuries later, expanded upon these traditions, introducing detailed narratives about the lives, battles, and divine exploits of gods like Vishnu, Shiva, and Devi. Together, these texts provide an extensive mythological framework that continues to influence Hindu practices and beliefs to this day.

One of the central themes in Hindu mythology is the concept of dharma, or cosmic order. The gods play a crucial role in maintaining balance in the universe, ensuring that righteousness prevails over chaos. Myths often depict the eternal struggle between good and evil, with divine beings intervening in the world through incarnations known as avatars. The most well-known avatars belong to Vishnu, who manifests as Rama, Krishna, and other heroic figures to restore harmony when disorder threatens creation. This belief in divine intervention reinforces the idea that morality and duty must be upheld in human life, as they are reflections of the cosmic law.
