Sinossi

Mary Shelley's "The Last Man" is a groundbreaking work of speculative fiction that delves into themes of isolation, existentialism, and the fragility of human civilization. Set in a dystopian future during the late twenty-second century, the novel explores the life of Lionel Verney, the purported last living man amidst a devastating plague that annihilates humanity. Shelley's rich, descriptive prose weaves a somber narrative, blending romanticism with precursory science fiction elements, echoing the anxieties of the Romantic era as well as the early stirrings of modernity. This innovative structure, combining personal and political narrative, positions the novel within the broader context of post-apocalyptic literature, challenging readers to confront the implications of societal collapse. Mary Shelley, often heralded as the mother of science fiction due to her seminal work "Frankenstein," drew on her own experiences of loss and social upheaval to craft "The Last Man." Written during a time of personal and political turmoil in the early 19th century, the text reflects her contemplations on mortality, legacy, and the shared human experience, as well as her preoccupations with the consequences of technology and progress. Readers of speculative fiction and those intrigued by themes of loneliness and the human condition will find "The Last Man" a compelling and profound exploration of both personal and collective despair. This novel invites contemplation on the nature of existence and the fate of humanity, making it an essential read for anyone interested in the intersections of literature and philosophy.

The Engineer by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth - The Big Wheels of tomorrow will be men who can see the big picture. But blowouts have small beginnings....
It was very simple. Some combination of low temperature and high pressure had forced something from the seepage at the ocean bottom into combination with something in the water around them.
And the impregnable armor around Subatlantic Oil's drilling chamber had discovered a weakness.
On the television screen it looked more serious than it was—so Muhlenhoff told himself, staring at it grimly. You get down more than a mile, and you're bound to have little technical problems. That's why deepsea oil wells were still there.
Still, it did look kind of serious. The water driving in the pitted faults had the pressure of eighteen hundred meters behind it, and where it struck it did not splash—it battered and destroyed. As Muhlenhoff watched, a bulkhead collapsed in an explosion of spray; the remote camera caught a tiny driblet of the scattering brine, and the picture in the screen fluttered and shrank, and came back with a wavering side-wise pulse.
Muhlenhoff flicked off the screen and marched into the room where the Engineering Board was waiting in attitudes of flabby panic.
As he swept his hand through his snow-white crew cut and called the board to order a dispatch was handed to him—a preliminary report from a quickly-dispatched company trouble-shooter team. He read it to the board, stone-faced.

Robert A. Heinlein's Delilah and the Space Rigger is a sharp and thought-provoking science fiction short story that explores themes of gender roles, workplace dynamics, and progress in space exploration. First published in 1949, this story showcases Heinlein's trademark blend of humor, social commentary, and hard science fiction. The story takes place on a space station under construction, where an all-male crew is suddenly thrown into disarray when a female technician, Delilah, joins their ranks. The station's foreman is convinced that women have no place in such a harsh and demanding environment, fearing that her presence will disrupt discipline and efficiency. However, as the story unfolds, Delilah proves herself more than capable, challenging outdated prejudices and demonstrating that skill and competence matter far more than gender. With Delilah and the Space Rigger, Heinlein delivers a witty and insightful examination of societal attitudes toward women in traditionally male-dominated fields, set against the backdrop of humanity's expansion into space. The story remains relevant today, highlighting the importance of merit over bias and showcasing Heinlein's forward-thinking approach to science fiction.Fast-paced and engaging, Delilah and the Space Rigger is not only an entertaining tale of life in space but also a reminder of the evolving nature of human progress, both technologically and socially.
