Sinossi

In "Frankenstein: The Original 1818 Edition," Mary Shelley delivers a groundbreaking exploration of the human condition, the interplay between creator and creation, and the ethical implications of scientific ambition. Written in a rich, Gothic style that intertwines vivid imagery and philosophical introspection, the novel is acclaimed as one of the earliest works of science fiction. Set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution, it encapsulates the anxieties of an era grappling with rapid technological advancements and moral dilemmas, as Victor Frankenstein's pursuit of knowledge results in the birth of a tormented creature that seeks acceptance and understanding. Mary Shelley, often considered the mother of science fiction, began writing "Frankenstein" when she was just eighteen, inspired by her intellectual conversations with peers such as Lord Byron and her father, the political philosopher William Godwin. Experiencing personal loss and societal upheaval, Shelley artfully weaves her own existential reflections and critiques of Romantic ideals into her narrative. The novel not only mirrors her personal struggles but also reflects broader societal fears regarding the potential perils of unrestrained technological progress. "Frankenstein" is a timeless classic that challenges readers to confront their own ethical boundaries in the face of innovation. It remains profoundly relevant today, inviting introspection about the consequences of our creations and the essence of humanity. This edition provides an authentic glimpse into Shelley's original vision, making it an essential read for both scholars and general readers alike.

Disturbing. Original. Terrifying. The 'master of horror' is back with the chilling tale of what lurks in the walls of an abandoned hospital.

In this abandoned hospital, pain lives on... and it wants revenge.

St Philomena's military hospital has been abandoned for over three years. Now Lilian Chesterfield, who works for one of the most successful building companies in England, is in charge of developing it into a luxury housing complex.

But as soon as she and her colleagues start work in the Jacobean-style mansion, their dream turns into a nightmare. They hear screaming from wards full of empty beds. They hear doors slamming and find cutlery scattered over the kitchen floor. Then they see faces peering at them from the mullioned windows.

Lilian is pragmatic – she doesn't believe in the supernatural. But just when she's put her mind at rest by scouring the mansion from top to bottom and finding nothing, a former patient of St Philomena's arrives with a warning. The hospital is haunted. And it is haunted by something a thousand times more terrifying than ghosts...

Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards was born on 7th June 1831 in Islington, London. She was educated at home by her mother and showed early promise as a writer, publishing her first poem at the age of 7 and her first story at 12. Thereafter several popular periodicals published her poetry, stories and articles.

In addition she also illustrated some of her own writings and painted scenes from books she had read. This talent was not supported by her parents, who saw an artist’s life as scandalous. Undeterred Amelia took up composing and performing music until a bout of typhus caused throat damage. Other interests soon followed until, early in the 1850s, Amelia focused exclusively on writing. Her early novels were well received, and with ‘Barbara's History’ in 1864, a work revolving around bigamy, her reputation was established.

Amelia’s pen was also the purveyor of ghost stories for magazines and are still anthologized as classic tales to this day.

In January 1851, Amelia became engaged, apparently to please her parents, but she quickly broke it off. In reality her emotional attachments were almost exclusively with women. From the early 1860s she lived with Ellen Drew Braysher, a widow 27 years her senior, until both women died in early 1892. During this relationship other women also entered and left her life. Her frequent travelling companion, Lucy Renshaw, accompanied her to Egypt in the winter of 1873 and there she found a life-changing interest in Egyptology. Aware of increasing threats from tourism and modern development she became an advocate for their research and preservation.

To advance the work Amelia largely abandoned much of her writing in favour of Egyptology and even took on strenuous lecture tours to raise funds.

After catching influenza, Amelia Edwards, ‘the Godmother of Egyptology’ died on 15th April 1892 at Weston-super-Mare. She was 60.

In this Venetian set story Edwards follows the trail of a man who, after the briefest of meetings, falls in love with a young Jewish girl, who has but one request of him.

Daisy did not get the life she deserved. Despite her compassion, nothing she did made a difference in the world. With her through it all was her selfish, bitter husband, working a job he hated while they lived off her income as a nurse.
The peace Daisy has carried in life does not follow her to the grave. A dead, bloodshot eye glowers from a dark bathroom. Below it, her deranged smile. Daisy, a mad corpse, haunts their townhouse.
She’s back and intent on punishing Roger Darling for his mistreatment. Her death shook him enough to brave his faults, but this improved man does her no good now. He can try to escape into the arms of others, but at the end of the day, we all return home. To keep his new friends and maintain his sanity, Roger must help Daisy move on before her violence touches everything he’s built. She won’t leave on her own.
