Sinossi

In "The Wind in the Rose-Bush, and Other Stories of the Supernatural," Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman crafts a collection of tales that explore the intersection of the mundane and the eerie. Drawing from her New England roots, Freeman's literary style features intricate character development and atmospheric detail, which immerse readers in the psychological landscape of her protagonists. Each story showcases her deft ability to evoke suspense and supernatural intrigue, reflecting the rising fascination with paranormal phenomena in late 19th-century American literature. The stories deftly balance realism with elements of the uncanny, often leaving readers with unsettling questions about the nature of reality and the unseen forces that may influence it. Freeman, a prominent figure in American literature, was one of the first women to write about the complexities of rural life and supernatural themes, often drawing from her personal experiences in a small New England town. Her work resonates deeply with themes of isolation and societal expectations, both of which can be observed in the lives of her characters. Wilkins Freeman's background, which includes a strong advocacy for women's voices in literature, profoundly informs her exploration of supernatural motifs, often framing them as reflections of societal anxieties. This collection is a must-read for enthusiasts of supernatural fiction and those intrigued by the societal constraints of Freeman's era. The stories, rich in psychological depth and eerie twists, will captivate readers seeking to explore the boundaries of the known and the unknown, offering an insightful examination of the shadowy undercurrents that swirl beneath the surface of everyday life.

The Top Ten - M R James - An Introduction

Here, in this volume, are some of the most precious gems of the British Ghost Story. M R James wrote around 30 of them and each is imbued with now familiar themes that still strike at the nerves, unsettle the heart and shine, unequalled in their brilliance.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

"The Shunned House" is a horror fiction novelette by American author H. P. Lovecraft, written on October 16–19, 1924. It was first published in the October 1937 issue of Weird Tales.
For many years, the narrator and his uncle, Dr. Elihu Whipple, have nurtured a fascination with an old abandoned house on Benefit Street. Dr. Whipple has made extensive use of records tracking the mysterious, yet apparently coincidental, sickness and death of many who have lived in the house for over one hundred years. They are also puzzled by the strange weeds growing in the yard, as well as an unexplained foul smell and whitish phosphorescent fungi growing in the cellar. There, the narrator discovers a strange, yellowish vapour in the basement, which seems to be coupled with a moldy outline of a huddled human form on the floor. The narrator and his uncle decide to spend the night in the house, investigating the possibility of some supernatural force. They set up both cots and chairs in the cellar, arm themselves with military flamethrowers, and outfit a modified Crookes tube in the hopes of destroying any supernatural presence they might find.

A collection of G.M.Hague's first three "Paranormal Tales" novellas, this brings together classic horror and traditional ghost stories into a full-length book that will keep you awake long into the night and leaving the lights on. In "Death Wish" a woman fervently wishes her adored husband wasn't dead - and gets far more than she wanted. "The Girl in the Back Seat" is a cautionary tale about picking up hitchhikers. Teenage girls can be difficult, especially when their unhappy spirits become obsessed with the living. "Footprints in the Snow" shows that war can be hell in an entirely different way. The strange abbey in the forest can never be a sanctury for anyone.
These three stories have everything for the true horror fan - ghosts, zombies, and terrifying mysteries from beyond the grave.

The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath is a novella by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. Begun probably in the autumn of 1926, the draft was completed on January 22, 1927 and it remained unrevised and unpublished in his lifetime. It is both the longest of the stories that make up his Dream Cycle and the longest Lovecraft work to feature protagonist Randolph Carter. Along with his 1927 novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, it can be considered one of the significant achievements of that period of Lovecraft's writing. The Dream-Quest combines elements of horror and fantasy into an epic tale that illustrates the scope and wonder of humankind's ability to dream.

They arrive alive. They always leave dead.
But first, they give me their confessions.
My name is Jack Steen, and for those who arrive on my 'death' ward at the Asylum, I'm the last face many will see before they die. I am the night nurse at an Asylum for the Criminally Insane, and most of my patients know me as their Angel of Death. I know them as mass murderers, rapists, and serial killers - among other things.
Here's what happens: they come on my floor, they give me their deathbed confession, and I help to make their death less painful. There's a catch, though: I want the real story, the one they haven't told anyone else.
The majority of these killers are expert manipulators. They could be playing their final game with me by messing with my head.
Now, maybe they're messing with yours too.
Inside this book are 4 confessions that relate to marriage and murder (and how they go hand in hand):THE PREACHER has quite the past.BETH shouldn’t be trusted.WILSON is a farmer with buried secrets.SAM has a thing for soil and gardens.
WARNING: There is swearing in this book. And some stories might be a trigger for something you have a hard time handling. But, these are the confessions of serial killers, mass murderers, and such, so what do you expect?
