Sinossi

An early work by the Marquis de Sade, “Justine, Or, The Misfortunes of Virtue” was originally written during a two week period in 1787 while the author was imprisoned in the Bastille. The story is concerned with the titular character, a twelve year old maiden who sets off, to make her way in France, and follows her through age twenty-six in her quest for virtue. In the search for work and shelter Justine continuously falls prey to a series of scoundrels who subject her to sexual torture and abuse. Having been numerously revised by the author and published in varying censored and unexpurgated editions there exists no definitive edition of this work. Presented here in this volume is the expurgated edition originally published by the Risus Press in 1931.

    The Ukrainian writer Vera Jelihovsky was born on the 29th April 1835.  At that time Ukraine, or Little Russia as it was also called, was part of the Russian Empire.   
 
Vera was also the sister of Helena Blavatsky, herself a noted writer and a co-founder of the Theosophical Society. 
 
As a writer Vera’s works rests mainly on her children’s stories and little of any of her work is known in the West.   
 
‘The General’s Will’ is a fascinating story of a dying man who tries, with the writing of a new Will, to right the wrongs his second marriage has caused to the children of his first.   
 
His scheming second wife attempts to change that.  But will her selfish plan succeed? 
 
Vera Jelihovsky died on the 17th May 1896.  She was 61.

    Jean Ingelow (17 March 1820 - 20 July 1897) was an English poet and novelist, who gained sudden fame in 1863. She also wrote several stories for children.
