  In October 2008, after a San Francisco loss to Seattle, Vernon Davis was put on blast by Coach Mike Singletary in a fiery speech criticizing his “me-myself-and-I attitude.” It proved to be the turning point in Davis’s career, and the inspiration for him to change his mind set and his game plan, as well as his perspective on life and family. 
   
  At the time, Davis was a young, talented player drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2006 at number six, one of the highest drafted tight ends in NFL history. He played ten years for the 49ers, including a 2013 Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens in a 34–31 heartbreaker, where Davis recorded six catches for 104 yards.  
   
  He later won a Super Bowl in 2016 with Peyton Manning and the Broncos, after nailing a crucial downfield block that sprung teammate C. L. Anderson for a key 34-yard run that helped the Broncos defeat the Carolina Panthers 24–10 for the ring. 
   
  Davis retired in 2019 after four final years of playing for his hometown team in Washington, DC. He’s now deeply involved in his new passion for acting and producing. Here, he rewinds his real-life tape to reflect on his youthful beginnings, his career, and competitive spirit—and the insights on teamwork, leadership, and responsibility that came in the aftermath of Coach Singletary’s press conference that prompted Davis to transform his football career and his life for the better.

  Jamal Saeed arrived as a refugee in Canada in 2016. In his native Syria, as a young man, his writing pushed both social and political norms. For this reason, as well as his opposition to the regimes of the al-Assads, he was imprisoned on three occasions for a total of 12 years. In each instance, he was held without formal charge and without judicial process. 
  		 
  My Road from Damascus not only tells the story of Saeed’s severe years in Syria’s most notorious military prisons but also his life during the country’s dramatic changes. Saeed chronicles modern Syria from the 1950s right up to his escape to Canada in 2016, recounting its descent from a country of potential to a pawn of cynical and corrupt powers. He paints a picture of village life, his youthful love affairs, his rebellion as a young Marxist, and his evolution into a free thinker, living in hiding as a teenager for 30 months while being hunted by the secret police. He recalls his brutal prison years, his final release, and his family’s harrowing escape to Canada.
  		 
  While many prison memoirs focus on the cruelty of incarceration, My Road from Damascus offers a tapestry of Saeed’s whole life. It looks squarely at brutality but also at beauty and poetry, hope and love.

  Dorothy Kathleen Broster was born on 2nd September 1877 at Devon Lodge in Grassendale Park, Garston, Liverpool. 
  At 16, the family moved to Cheltenham, where she attended Cheltenham Ladies' College and then on to St Hilda’s College, Oxford to read history, where she was one of the first female students, although at this time women were not awarded degrees. 
  Broster served as secretary to Charles Harding Firth, a Professor of History for several years, and collaborated on several of his works. Her first two novels were co-written with a college friend, Gertrude Winifred Taylor. 
  With the Great War interrupting her literary ambitions she served as a Red Cross nurse at a Franco-American hospital, but returned to England with a knee infection in 1916.  
  After the war, she moved near to Battle in East Sussex and took up writing full-time.  
  In 1920 she at last received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Oxford. 
  Her novels, mainly historical fiction, peaked in popularity with ‘The Flight of the Heron’, in 1925, a best-seller followed up by two sequels. 
  As well as poetry and various articles she also wrote several short stories, the best known of which is a classic of weird fiction ‘The Couching at the Door’ in which an artist appears to be haunted by a mysterious entity. 
  An intensely private individual many readers deduced from her name that she was both a man and Scottish. 
  D K Broster died in Bexhill Hospital on 7th February 1950.  She was 73.

  Michael O'Brien was born in Cork, Ireland on 25th October 1826.   
  He finished his education at the University of Dublin and some accounts have him serving for a time in the British army at some in this period.  
  Whilst at college he had shown some talent for writing poetry and two of his poems were later published in ‘The Ballads of Ireland’ (1856). 
  Departing for London with an £8,000 inheritance that was all spent during his stay of 4 years, he spent some time editing a periodical to aid the World’s Fair of 1851. 
  A year later he was bound for the United States with a new name, Fitz James, and an ambition to obtain a career in literature. 
  His earliest works in the US were for The Lantern, before publishing works in the Home Journal, the New York Times, and the American Whig Review. However, his most important early outlet was Harper's Magazine, and he first published with them in February 1853, with ‘The Two Skulls’, and would over his short life contribute more than sixty articles of poetry and prose.  
  As an established writer he now proceeded to publish magazines and periodicals of the calibre of the New York Saturday Press, Putnam's Magazine, Vanity Fair, and the Atlantic Monthly to whom he sent ‘The Diamond Lens’ (1858) and ‘The Wonder Smith’ (1859).  These are very early examples of science-fiction writing and along with several others establish him as one of the founders.  He also wrote, either as originals or as adaptions several plays including ‘A Gentleman from Ireland’. 
  In New York, he was associated with a brilliant set of contemporary Bohemians. At the weekly dinners hosted by the editor, actor and dramatist John Brougham, or at the nightly suppers at Pfaff's on Broadway, he was at the center of the entertainment. 
  With the outbreak of Civil War in 1861, O'Brien joined the 7th regiment of the New York National Guard hoping to see action at the front.  
  Fitz James O’Brien was badly wounded in a skirmish on 26th February 1862.  From his wounds he caught tetanus and died at Cumberland, Maryland on 6th April 1862. He was 35.
