  Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 to July 15, 1940), also known as the Alton Giant, and the Giant of Illinois, was born and raised in Alton, Illinois. He is the tallest person in recorded history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Wadlow's height was 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) while his weight reached 439 lbs (199 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone (HGH). The following audio recordings are from a 1937 New York radio interview, a 1937 Ripley's Believe It or Not radio interview, and outtakes from 1930 film footage of Wadlow as a 12 year-old.

  	They settled on 17-year-old Cosimo de’ Medici, and, to be fair, almost nothing about him suggested he would become the powerful ruler he did. He had grown up far from the city, in the hill country where his branch of the family had its roots, as the son of a famous soldier and a devout mother. He had no training in statecraft and no faction of his own, which is precisely why the men who chose him chose him did so. As a Medici by blood who might lend their arrangements legitimacy while they kept the substance of power in their own hands, he seemed to be a harmless choice. 
  	It was the gravest misjudgment of their careers and a seminal moment in the history of Italy, because in the span of months, the boy shattered an army of exiles in the field, sent the leaders of the old republic to the block, and began the slow, merciless work of making himself sole master of Florence. Within 20 years, he had conquered the rival republic of Siena and ruled nearly all of Tuscany, and in time, he had won from the pope a crown and a title no Florentine had ever carried as the Grand Duke of Tuscany. From that position of power, he established a royal dynasty that controlled Tuscany for two centuries.

  States of profound meditative concentration, the jhānas are central to the earliest Buddhist teachings. For centuries in Southeast Asia, oral yogāvacara (yoga practitioner) lineages kept traditional jhāna practices alive, but in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, reforms in Theravāda Buddhism downplayed the importance of jhāna in favor of vipassanā (insight) meditation. Some began to consider the jhānas to be strictly the domain of monastics, unattainable in the context of modern lay life. In recent years, however, there has been a resurgence of interest in the jhānas, and as researcher Paul Dennison shows, the esoteric and sometimes "magical" pre-reform practices of Southeast Asia hold powerful potential for modern lay practitioners living in a more scientifically minded world. Drawing on traditional Buddhist doctrine, teachings from lesser-known meditation texts such as the Yogāvacara's Manual, and findings from the first in-depth, peer-reviewed neuroscience study of jhāna meditation, Dennison unpacks this ancient practice in all its nuance while posing novel questions about perception, subjectivity, and the nature of enlightenment.
