Sinossi

"Building Materials" offers a comprehensive exploration of construction materials that seamlessly weaves together scientific principles, historical evolution, and sustainable practices in the built environment. This multifaceted examination investigates how material choices influence not only structural integrity but also environmental impact and cultural identity across different societies and time periods.

The book uniquely bridges the gap between traditional building practices and modern materials science, making complex technical concepts accessible through practical examples and real-world applications. The text progresses logically through three main sections, beginning with an in-depth analysis of physical and chemical properties of materials, from ancient stone and wood to cutting-edge synthetics. The narrative then advances to material processing and manufacturing techniques, before culminating in a thorough examination of sustainability considerations and life-cycle assessments.

Through detailed case studies of significant buildings worldwide and laboratory testing data, readers gain practical insights into material selection and performance evaluation. What sets this work apart is its interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from chemistry, environmental science, and structural engineering to provide a holistic understanding of building materials.

The content proves particularly valuable for architecture and engineering students, as well as construction professionals, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical guidance for making informed decisions about material selection that balance performance, cost, and sustainability. Through accessible language and comprehensive visual aids, the book serves as both a technical reference and a practical guide for understanding the evolving landscape of construction materials.

'Utterly brilliant - engaging, thrilling, disturbing, revelatory, explosive' GEORGE MONBIOT'This extraordinary book, written with startling honesty and vulnerability, traces Charlie's remarkable journey from deep despair to resistance, reconnection and remedy. If you are ready to channel grief within into action in the world, read on.' KATE RAWORTH, author of Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist'Spinning Out is a salve, weaving together the intricacies of madness underscored by the backdrop of a changing climate. It's an essential and insightful resource in the fight for climate justice.' TORI TSUI, author of It's Not Just You'Heart-rendingly, heart-stoppingly glorious' MANDA SCOTT, author of bestselling Boudica seriesHumanity is driving the earth mad. Now, the earth is driving us mad in return. Charlie Hertzog Young became a climate activist in his early teens. His journey led him onto airport runways and into the halls of power, but also to a serious mental health breakdown. He had to rebuild himself physically and psychologically, before focusing his efforts on collective mental recovery in response to a planet in crisis.Spinning Out explores how climate chaos and the failure of those in power to tackle it are causing an inevitable mental health crisis across the globe. The relationship between the climate and our emotional wellbeing goes far deeper than eco-anxiety. It goes to he roots of our civilisation - its principles, its practices and its false solutions. With testimony from dozens of activists, organisers and researchers across every habitable continent, Spinning Out is a celebration (of other ways to be) and a manual for anyone who wants to fight for a better world, while avoiding burnout and despair.Wedding the needs of the earth with the needs of the human mind, Spinning Out offers a powerful, collective vision for change.

Before the Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod, what was happening in North America? Who was there? What civilizations rose and fell? For years, the answers to these questions have been shrouded in mystery.

At the time of European contact, a diverse world of Native peoples thrived across the continent. What was their backstory? Who were the ancestors of the Sioux? Where did the Navajo come from? What about the Apache, the Comanche, the Cherokee?

They Had Names is the result of a multi-year deep dive into genetics, indigenous histories, archaeology, and linguistics—an ambitious quest to uncover answers to these questions.

In this book, you will explore pre-Columbian links between civilizations of the Old World and civilizations of the New. You’ll read about unexpected connections between Mexico and tribes north of the Rio Grande. You’ll also discover that ancient ruins from North American civilizations still exist, that these ruins tell dramatic stories, and that they can still be visited today.

On this continent, peoples and kingdoms rose and fell, great battles were fought, heroes were enshrined—heroes whose names have been preserved.

Wernher von Braun ( March 23, 1912 – June 16, 1977) was a German aerospace engineer and space architect. He was the leading figure in the development of rocket technology in Nazi Germany and a pioneer of space technology and science in the United States.
After World War II, von Braun was secretly moved to the US, along with roughly 1,600 other German scientists, engineers, and technicians, as part of Operation Paperclip. He worked for the United States Army on an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) program, and he developed the rockets that launched the United States' first space satellite Explorer 1.
He served as director of the Marshall Space Flight Center and as the chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon. In 1955, von Braun became a naturalized citizen of the United States. In 1975, von Braun received the National Medal of Science. This recording is from Dr. Von Braun's speech at the 1st Annual SOLE Symposium, September 13, 1966, in Huntsville Alabama.
