Sinossi

"Winston Churchill" explores the life and times of the iconic British leader, focusing on his political career, wartime leadership during World War II, and enduring legacy. The book examines his formative years, his powerful oratory skills that boosted British morale, and his strategic decisions during the Second World War, revealing how his stubbornness and vision helped rally a nation against Nazi Germany.

Set against the backdrop of the declining British Empire, the book argues that Churchill's unwavering belief in freedom and democracy, shaped by personal trials, was crucial to Britain's resistance. The biography unfolds chronologically, starting with Churchill's aristocratic upbringing and entry into politics. It then delves into his wartime leadership, analyzing his speeches and relationships with allies like Roosevelt and Stalin, and concludes with his post-war reflections.

Drawing from diverse sources, including Churchill's writings and recent historical scholarship, the book offers a nuanced portrait of his strengths and weaknesses. By connecting Churchill's life to political science, literature, and sociology, the book enriches the reader’s understanding of his complex character within a specific historical context and addresses debates surrounding his legacy.

    The Neurotic Character -...

    Alfred Adler

As the 20th century drew to a close, the Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler (1870-1937) was perhaps the least known of the prominent figures of his time - in particular Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung - and yet he continues to be a figure of influence in the 21st century. His school of ‘individual psychology’ involved a holistic approach to the study of the individual, with a key focus on the way each person viewed the world, especially regarding their concerns of inferiority. This applied to both men and women in their different ways. The Neurotic Character is, as the editor of this modern translation states, 'Adler’s magnum opus - complex, profound and brilliant in its crystallised capture of the human soul gone astray.'

Written in 1911, Adler continued to expand and develop his ideas over the following decades as he assimilated experience gained from his practice. It opens with the Theoretical Part, in which he introduces ‘The Origin and Development of the Inferiority Feeling and Its Effects', as well as ‘Psychic Compensation and Its Preparation’ and ‘The Accentuated Fiction as Guiding Idea in the Neurosis’.

The second, major part of his work follows - the Practical Part. In this, Adler examines a wide range of issues, from ‘Greed and Distrust’, to the sexual causes and effects of inferiority. In the succeeding sections, he considers how suppressing everyday feelings and habits experienced by men and women in the course of their lives - issues such as impatience and dissatisfaction, cruelty, self-reproach - can all have profound effects on the individual.

The writing is clear and supported by case studies providing a strong perspective of reality. It is not surprising that, as a result, it can be seen how strongly Adlerian ideas and views have influenced the practice of psychotherapy today. And that for all the apparent dominance of Freudian and Jungian doctrine in psychological and academic circles, the work of Alfred Adler should not be underestimated. This recording presents the new translation of The Neurotic Character, commissioned and edited by the Adlerian psychotherapist, Henry Stein, who provides a useful appendix - an introduction to classical Adlerian theory and practice.

What should a therapist do when a patient reveals critical information at the end of a session?

It's a near-universal experience among mental health practitioners: a patient drops a bombshell—a critical disclosure that moves the treatment forward—on their way out, with a hand on the doorknob. This "doorknob moment" creates a stressful dilemma for clinicians, especially when the patient is distraught. Should the clinician end the session on time, or run over and be late for the next patient?

Here, seasoned psychiatrist Daniela V. Gitlin provides clinicians with a clear, evidence-based answer. By conceptualizing the functional differences between patient and therapist in the treatment relationship as a metaphor for the functional differences between right and left cerebral hemispheres, Gitlin's argument yields a comprehensive explanation for why doorknob moments occur, why they are necessary to prevent treatment stagnation, and why ending on time makes patients feel safer to deliver them.

What drives someone to commit the unthinkable?
    Austin 1966. Dunblane 1996. Port Arthur 1996. Utøya 2011.
In this deeply insightful account, pre-eminent forensic psychiatrist Paul E. Mullen examines the complex psychology behind lone mass killers. With unflinching clarity, he burrows into the minds of these damaged individuals, drawing on his decades of forensic work assessing mass murderers first-hand.
Mullen brings readers into a dark landscape populated with killers who have achieved the ugly fame they had sought – in the US, UK, Australia, Norway and beyond – as well as lesser-known, equally chilling cases. He illuminates troubling patterns that unite the perpetrators, such as obsessive rage, personal grievance, fascination with weapons and yearning for infamy, often culminating in suicide. He also considers the impact of media sensationalism on the killers' grandiose fantasies and proposes steps toward better threat assessment and identification of warning signs.
Challenging myths around madness and violence, Mullen reveals the unsettling truth: these killers are not incomprehensible monsters, but profoundly disturbed people shaped by knowable forces that, when properly understood, can be countered effectively. Running Amok does not simply examine tragedy; it is a call to action, urging society to confront the shadows and prevent the next horror.
