Sinossi

'Adrift On The Sea' offers a comprehensive exploration of maritime survival through the lens of real-life cases and scientific research, examining what it truly takes to survive when stranded on the open ocean. The book masterfully weaves together three crucial aspects of sea survival: the body's physical responses to extreme maritime conditions, the psychological battles faced by survivors, and the practical techniques that can mean the difference between life and death at sea.

Drawing from historical records and modern scientific understanding, the book analyzes remarkable survival stories, including Steven Callahan's 1982 ordeal and Jose Salvador Alvarenga's 2014 Pacific crossing. These compelling accounts serve as practical demonstrations of the book's central argument: that survival at sea depends on the intricate relationship between preparation, knowledge, and adaptability.

The text thoughtfully balances academic rigor with accessibility, presenting complex concepts through a combination of analytical insights and narrative examples. The book progresses logically from fundamental survival theory to practical applications, covering essential topics like emergency preparedness, navigation, water procurement, and rescue protocols.

What sets this work apart is its multidisciplinary approach, incorporating insights from marine biology, meteorology, and psychology to create a holistic understanding of maritime survival. Each chapter concludes with practical exercises and checklists, making it an invaluable resource for both maritime professionals and adventure enthusiasts interested in understanding the challenges and strategies of ocean survival.

The Tangut people, an ethnic group of uncertain origins, gradually emerged as a distinct force in northwestern China. They are believed to have descended from the Qiang tribes, a collection of nomadic and semi-nomadic groups that roamed the Tibetan Plateau and the Ordos region. Over centuries, they migrated and settled in what is now modern-day Ningxia and parts of Gansu and Inner Mongolia, where they established communities and developed a unique cultural identity. Their position between the Tibetan Plateau, the Central Asian steppes, and the Chinese heartland made them an important intermediary in regional affairs.
The Tangut rise to prominence was influenced by their interactions with the dominant powers of the region. The Tibetan Empire, which controlled vast areas of western China until its decline in the ninth century, played a significant role in shaping early Tangut culture and governance. The collapse of the Tibetan Empire created a power vacuum that allowed smaller groups like the Tangut to assert their independence. At the same time, the weakening of the Tang Dynasty left northern China vulnerable to fragmentation, further enabling the Tangut to carve out a space for themselves.
By the tenth century, the Tangut had developed into a formidable military and political entity, leveraging their strategic location along trade routes to establish economic and diplomatic ties with neighboring states. They maintained relations with the Song Dynasty to the east, the Tibetan remnants to the south, and the nomadic Khitan Liao Empire to the north. These interactions not only enriched Tangut society but also introduced them to a variety of political models, from the bureaucratic governance of the Chinese dynasties to the tribal confederations of the steppe.

Features a new "where are they now" section, with updates about lives of expedition's original climbers and updated resources based on the "Anti-Racism in the Outdoors" (ARITO) guide.

Outdoor journalist James Edward Mills's book, The Adventure Gap, is a groundbreaking volume that is equal parts adventure story, history, and inspiration as it chronicles the first American all-Black summit attempt on Denali in 2013. Mills uses this momentous expedition as a jumping-off point to explore diversity in the outdoors, from Mathew Henson who stood at the North Pole in 1909 to contemporary adventurers such as polar explorer Barbara Hillary and rock climber Kai Lightner.

This tenth anniversary edition once again shares the compelling events that unfolded during Expedition Denali's summit bid. But it also provides fresh context: A new thought-provoking afterword by Mills examines what has evolved in and around the outdoor community since that effort. He highlights progress and inspiring stories, such as Full Circle Everest, an expedition led by Phillip Henderson that put an all-Black team on top of the world's highest peak. And he points to places where we can and should all strive for higher achievement. The Adventure Gap has become an essential text in outdoor education and inspiration—a story of our times, now more relevant than ever.

Paris, often known as the "City of Light," is renowned for its iconic landmarks, romantic ambiance, and vibrant culture. Yet, beneath its grand boulevards and charming streets, lies an entirely different world—an underground labyrinth that has shaped the city in ways few know or understand. From ancient Roman origins to the modern-day metro system, Paris’s subterranean spaces are a testament to the ingenuity, mystery, and resilience of the city.
The underground world of Paris is not merely a collection of tunnels and chambers; it is a complex network that has served multiple purposes throughout the ages. Some of these spaces were created for practical reasons—such as the quarries that provided building materials for the city's growing skyline—while others evolved into places of mystique and darkness, such as the famous Catacombs, now home to the remains of millions. What began as a means of resource extraction gradually became a vault of history, culture, and secrets.
This book delves into the hidden depths beneath Paris’s streets, exploring the lesser-known aspects of the city's subterranean heritage. It examines the origins of these tunnels, from the Romans who first began to carve through the limestone to the workers who later expanded them into extensive catacombs. It also explores the multifaceted role these spaces have played throughout history: as a refuge during times of war, as a setting for revolutionary movements, and as a sanctuary for those who choose to live outside the city's mainstream society.
