Phenomenology is a branch of philosophy that seeks to explore and describe the structures of experience as they present themselves to consciousness. Rooted in the Greek words phainomenon (meaning "that which appears") and logos (meaning "study" or "discourse"), phenomenology is concerned with the direct investigation and description of phenomena as consciously experienced, without recourse to theories about their causal explanation or objective reality. It aims to understand the essence of experiences, focusing on how things are perceived, rather than on external facts or empirical data.
Edmund Husserl, often regarded as the father of phenomenology, established the discipline in the early 20th century. His groundbreaking work sought to return philosophy to the "things themselves," emphasizing the need to examine experiences without preconceived notions or biases. Husserl introduced the concept of intentionality, the idea that consciousness is always directed toward something—it is always consciousness of something. This fundamental notion shifted the focus from the contents of the mind to the ways in which objects are experienced, highlighting the inseparable relationship between the subject and the object in acts of consciousness.
Phenomenology differs from other philosophical approaches in that it does not seek to explain experiences through causal or scientific means. Instead, it adopts a descriptive method, aiming to reveal the underlying structures that make experience possible. Through techniques such as epoché (the suspension of judgment about the external world) and phenomenological reduction (focusing solely on the contents of consciousness), phenomenologists attempt to uncover the pure essence of experiences, free from external assumptions.

The plan works even if you have $0 to your name and currently make minimum wage.
If you have nothing to your name and currently only make minimum wage, it can take up to 20 years.
Otherwise, if you are already partway there, it will happen faster for you.
It might sound sensational, but at the end of the day, setting yourself up for retirement is just a matter of simple math and consistent long-term self-discipline. It is as extremely easy, completely realistic, and actually unavoidable as it is for an obese person who is 200 lbs overweight to lose that weight and keep it off by following a certain diet plan with a certain calorie budget.
This is not a get-rich-quick scheme. This is not the crash diet of financial plans. This is a long-term plan that uses the power of consistency, self-discipline, and exponential growth to generate seemingly incredible results over the long-term. But they only seem incredible. Ultimately, it is simple math, and the real power comes simply from you having the self-discipline to follow the plan consistently year after year.

Vladimir Lenin lies in a tomb in Moscow's Red Square. History has not been kind to this Russian leader, his teachings reviled by modern mainstream politics. But in today's capitalist society, riven by class inequality and imperialist wars, perhaps it is worth returning to this communist icon's demand for "Peace, Land and Bread", and his radical understanding of democracy.

Lenin was wrestling with the question of "what is to be done?" when facing the catastrophes of his own time. Against the odds, the Bolshevik party succeeded in rejecting both the corrupt and decaying Romanov dynasty, as well as the capitalist economic system which had started to take root in Russia.

To understand how this happened, and what we can learn from him today, Paul Le Blanc takes us through Lenin's dynamic revolutionary thought, how he worked as part of a larger collective, and how he centered the labor movement in Russia and beyond, uncovering a powerful form of democracy that could transform our activism today.
