Sinossi

M. R. James's "A Warning to the Curious, and Other Ghost Stories" is a seminal collection that redefines the ghost story within the early 20th-century literary framework. Employing a narrative style that seamlessly blends atmospheric detail with understated terror, James crafts tales rich in eerie suspense and ingrained with a distinct scholarly nuance. His use of antiquarian settings and the exploration of folklore and archaeology punctuate each story, giving rise to a palpable sense of dread that resonates with readers, making them question the boundaries between the mortal and the supernatural. Montague Rhodes James, an influential medieval scholar and university lecturer, drew inspiration from his profound knowledge of history and archaeology. His academic background notably influenced his storytelling technique, as he often imbued his narratives with learned references, merging intellectual rigor with chills of the macabre. James's own fascination with the uncanny is evident in his characters, often depicted as rational men confronted with inexplicable horrors, reflecting his belief in the rich tapestry of hidden histories. Readers seeking masterful horror rooted in scholarly traditions will find "A Warning to the Curious, and Other Ghost Stories" to be an essential addition to their collection. James's articulate prose invites an immersive experience into the eerie and unknown, making it a compelling read for enthusiasts of ghost stories and gothic literature alike.

Is Karina's missing aunt on vacation . . . or on the lam?

Karina is trying to keep her mind on getting a cosponsor for a bill, but it's tough with her mom blowing up her phone. By the time Karina finally stops hitting "ignore", Mom is frantic. It appears Karina's Aunt Vera has disappeared, fibbed to her employer about the reason for her absence, even abandoned her beloved cat, Nightshade—which is completely out of character. Karina would bet her favorite pair of designer shoes that Vera is in some kind of trouble.

However, when Karina hauls her cookies from DC to historic Williamsburg to search Vera's house, she finds nothing suspicious. Except for a mischievous Civil War ghost who scares the bejesus out of her and keeps trashing Vera's office. Until Karina realizes his seemingly random ectoplasmic tantrums have a purpose—revealing key evidence.

Something is definitely fishy, but the clues aren't adding up. And as the spirit's visitations become more urgent, Karina calls on reinforcements for help—her latest squeeze Rick Donovan and her sister Jillian. Because the cops are following faulty leads, which could put Vera on the wrong end of an arrest warrant . . . if she's found alive.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft is among the greatest American masters of fantasy and the supernatural.

Born in 1890, a native of Providence, Rhode Island, his health was uncertain from childhood and he led a sheltered early life. His semi-invalidism enabled him to read omnivorously, and as a shy imaginative child he began to invent what would in his adult life become a whole macabre fantastic world of his own, peopled by creatures out of his own weird imagination.

As an adult he was retiring, almost a recluse. Tall, thin and pale, but with bright alert eyes, he was much given to wandering his native city in the dark hours of the night, and he became a devoted student of its antiquities.

Although he began to write early he had nothing published until he was in his twenties. He set many of his stories around the imaginary town of Arkham, and invented an entire mythology of his own, its core being the demoniac cult of Cthulhu, based on the lore or legend that the world was at one time inhabited by another race who, in practising black magic, lost their foothold or were expelled, yet live on outside, ever ready to take possession of this earth again.

Since his early death in 1937 his stories have continued to attract attention and praise from an ever-growing audience.
