Sinossi

In "Life of Beethoven," Ludwig Nohl offers a meticulously detailed biography that intricately explores the life and genius of one of music's most revered figures, Ludwig van Beethoven. Nohl's narrative style is characterized by a blend of rigorous research and lyrical prose, capturing the emotional depth and historical significance of Beethoven's work within the broader context of the late Classical and early Romantic periods. The book delves into Beethoven's tumultuous personal life, and his tumultuous interactions with contemporaries, alongside the evolution of his compositions, rendering it not only an educational text but also an engaging read for both music enthusiasts and scholars alike. Ludwig Nohl, a German musicologist and biographer, was profoundly influenced by his own experiences as a musician and scholar. His dedication to Beethoven's legacy is reflected in his extensive research and writings, which emerge from a deep commitment to understanding the composer's innovative contributions to music. Nohl's ability to articulate the connection between Beethoven's life events and his artistic output adds a unique depth to the biography, allowing readers to grasp the man behind the music. I highly recommend "Life of Beethoven" to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Beethoven's life, struggles, and monumental achievements. Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

Inside the Reagan White House has all this—plus a vivid take on the Reagan assassination attempt, Gorbachev and the Reykjavik summit, Ollie North and the Contras, the 1988 Bush-Dukakis contest—and other critical moments of that era.

Original insight on Ronald Reagan, as well as discussions of cabinet members and others, are interspersed with personal anecdotes, off-hand comments, and unique family details that historians and general audiences will love.

And at the heart of the story are the thousands of dedicated, patriotic Americans who helped Ronald Reagan as he worked to push back against the Soviet Union, promote democracy, improve trade, lower taxes, and reduce the size and scope of government.

Vibrant, moving and diverse stories of shape-shifting between cultures.

'To be Indian growing up in Australia is to tread the narrow line between here and there, to constantly code-switch and navigate between filling the needs and aspirations of your family, your community – and yourself.'

'Indian-Australian' is not a one-size-fits-all descriptor. Given the depth and richness of diversity of the Indian subcontinent, it is fitting that its diaspora is similarly varied.

Growing Up Indian in Australia reflects and celebrates this vibrant diversity. It features contributions from Australian-Indian writers, both established and emerging, who hail from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and experiences. This colourful, energetic anthology offers reflections on identity, culture, family, food and expectations, ultimately revealing deep truths about both Australian and Indian life.

Criminology is the scientific study of crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system. It examines the nature, causes, and consequences of criminal behavior, seeking to understand why individuals engage in crime and how society responds to such acts. Criminology is not limited to merely studying criminal acts, but also investigates the societal reactions to crime, the policies implemented to combat it, and the broader impact on social structures. As a multidisciplinary field, criminology draws upon theories and methods from sociology, psychology, law, and political science, making it a vital area of study for both academic and practical purposes.
The evolution of criminology dates back to ancient civilizations, where crime and punishment were often directly linked to religious or cultural beliefs. In these early stages, crime was seen as a moral failing or an act that required divine intervention. However, as societies progressed, the understanding of crime became more secular and focused on the individual and social factors influencing criminal behavior. During the 18th century, the field of criminology began to take shape with the introduction of the Classical School of Criminology, which argued that individuals have free will and make rational decisions based on pleasure and pain. This theory laid the foundation for modern criminal law and criminal justice systems.

After an exceptionally wild Mother's Day where she danced like there was no tomorrow, picked a fight with a stranger and collided with the floor, Johannesburg scriptwriter and author, Pamela Power, is forced to take a hard look at her drinking habits. She realises that although she does not need to find an AA group immediately, she might be a serial binge drinker and needs to take back control.
In this honest, yet humorous account of her year of not getting sh*tfaced, Pamela examines her long relationship with alcohol. She is shocked to realise just how much of a crutch alcohol has been for her. There is always a bottle of wine or prosecco around to help her manage the many demands of life as a freelancer and a parent.
Pamela starts her journey to sobriety at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic as her family faces financial troubles and life in the suburban parks of Johannesburg isn't so blissful anymore. Through her, we experience all the frustration, irritation and surprising benefits of going dry.
In dealing with her dependence on alcohol, Pamela also confronts her troubled relationship with her parents. While many other sober-curious books portray sobriety as the only answer, in the end Pam finds a sweet spot between total sobriety and binge drinking: moderation.
