Sinossi

The writing of the The Life of Death is as remarkable as the story it tells. Lucy Booth was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and died in 2016. During those five years she wrote this novel and it was her last wish to have it published posthumously. The novel is made all the more compelling by its profound observations about love and mortality. For fans of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, How to Stop Time by Matt Haig.

A rash of sacrificial deaths in California leads an investigator into a nightmare world of occultism and Nazi terror: “A master of the genre.” —Rocky Mountain News   The shocking suicide of his beautiful fiancée has left Lloyd Denman devastated. Though outwardly happy, Celia Williams chose to set herself on fire, ending her young life in the most excruciating manner imaginable. Haunted by her death, Lloyd vows to uncover the truth behind her bizarre actions. An answer may be waiting for him in the California desert, where ashes and bone are all that remain of a busload of passengers who perished in an apparent mass suicide by fire that has the police baffled.   But Lloyd’s desperate search is pulling him deeper into the circle of the Salamanders—a world domination cult born of the same dark and ancient secrets that spawned Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. And once in, there may be no way out for Lloyd, except through the terrible purifying agony of flame.   A gripping masterwork of supernatural suspense from one of the very best in the nightmare business, Graham Masterton’s The Hymn is a breathtakingly original tale.  Combining terrors both psychological and supernatural with the mystical secrets of Native American shamans and Nazi butchers alike, the award-winning, critically acclaimed author of The Manitou spins a web of darkness guaranteed to ensnare fans of Stephen King, Peter Straub, and other masters of first-class horror. Enjoy this short story by Mace Styx:
"Still, despite my mother’s warnings and the strange feelings that her less specific warnings gave me. I didn’t want to look like a coward in front of Andy and Mike, so instead of protesting or sharing what my mom had said. I instead clambered up the iron ladder, plonked myself down cross legged on the roof and prepared myself for the process by cracking open a preparatory beer. Andy, as always, was marvelously melodramatic.
He pulled out the board with an almost hushed reverence, clearing the space on the ground of the loose stones and bottle caps we had left on our previous visits. Laying a small black cloth onto the ground as a cushion, before placing the board gently on top of it. Mike and I shared a glance and a knowing smile as Andy produced the planchette and broke into an introductory speech that wouldn’t have been out of place in a Hammer horror movie.
He warned us that the Ouija board was a strange and mysterious object, that the spirits could be both temperamental and deceptive. That we might not get any responses at all and that while speaking to the dead might offer us great insight, they might also terrify us with the naked truth of their answers.
“Naked”? Mike echoed, his hormones jumping into action at the slightest suggestion of anything raunchy."

Joseph Soderini di Avenzano is America's most celebrated chef...
Some believe he cut a deal with the Devil to achieve fame and fortune. Whether he is actually Bocuse or Beelzebub, Avenzano is approaching the twenty-fifth anniversary of his glittering Palm Beach restaurant, Chateau de la Mer, patterned after the Michelin-starred palaces of Europe. Journalist David Fox arrives in Palm Beach to interview the chef for a story on the restaurant’s silver jubilee and quickly becomes involved with Chateau de la Mer’s hostess, Alessandra, unwittingly transforming himself into Avenzano’s rival. When the chef invites David to winter in Florida and write his authorized biography, he gradually becomes sucked into the restaurant’s vortex—shipments of cocaine coming up from the Caribbean; the Mafia connections and unexplained murder of the chef’s original partner; and the chef’s ravenous ex-wives, swirling in the background like a hidden coven. As Alessandra plots the demise of the chef, David tries to sort out hallucination and reality, while Avenzano plays with him like a feline’s catnip-stuffed toy.
