  In the winter of 1925, a pair of 21-year-old men drove out of Perth in a small second-hand Citroen nicknamed “Bubsie” headed for Darwin. At the time, no motor vehicle had ever drive to Darwin from Perth and their borrowed Citroen had less horsepower than a modern-day lawn mower. There were no serviced roads north of Meekatharra and few petrol stations. With most of the routes north unmapped cattle station tracks, the boys—Nevill Westwood and Greg Davies—would need to rely on the generosity of cattle station managers for food and fuel. 
  Getting to Darwin was adventure enough, but their journey took an unexpected turn when a car dealer encouraged them to keep driving to the east coast instead of returning to Perth via steam ship. It was a journey that would make Australian motoring history—the first car to drive around Australia—and the original vehicle is now housed at the National Museum as a vehicle of national significance.

  Henry Louis Wallace terrorized Charlotte, North Carolina, from May 1992 to March 1994.  Wallace preyed on lower economic-class Black women between 17 and 35 years old. He knew most of his victims, some through his job at Taco Bell, and gained their trust with his friendly demeanor and gentle nature—concealing a monster fueled by drug abuse and rage against women.  A rarity in that he was an African American serial killer, his murderous rampage spurred controversy throughout the city. Community members accused local police of ignoring the murders because of the victims' race. Wallace attended the funerals of many of his victims and offered condolences to families. The ensuing investigation became the largest in North Carolina’s history.  Wallace was eventually found guilty and convicted of nine counts of murder, but he admitted to more killings while incarcerated; he is potentially responsible for anywhere from 20 to 90 deaths of Black women. Wallace continues to appeal and awaits his execution at Central Prison in Raleigh.  BAD HENRY: The Murderous Rampage of ‘The Taco Bell Strangler’ by Ron Chepesiuk offers valuable insight into the psychology of serial killers and sheds light on issues surrounding race and policing.

  Let’s be clear. We are all equal under the law.  However, even in these more modern times that is not an absolute and still remains a distant ambition for many.  
   
  In the days when Britain ruled the waves and bestrode the world as its policeman and plunderer in chief it also subjugated half of its own people to second class status.  Women were chattel and property.  There were some exceptions based on wealth and birthright but for the overwhelming majority your lot was to fall in with the rules and do as you were told.  Many did. 
   
  But whilst male society sought to place obstacles in the path to equality, it could not deny their literary talents, which many times they circumvented by using male pseudonyms.  However, the soaring sales of magazines and periodicals during the Victorian Age meant they had voracious appetites for literature, whatever the sex of its gender. 
   
  Dozens of authors appeared to fill the need.  Narratives had new ideas.  Characters were emboldened by societal changes and the female voice taking responsibility. 
   
  The women included here are talents that dazzle.  Put them up against anyone and they rise to the top.  Whether they remain with an avid readership today or faded to obscurity with the passing of the times their quality remains undimmed.
