Sinossi

"XML Data Format" offers a comprehensive exploration of the Extensible Markup Language (XML), highlighting its essential role in modern data management and system integration. The book emphasizes XML’s ability to create custom data formats tailored to specific needs, making it a versatile tool for various applications, including web services and data warehousing. XML's self-describing nature, using tags to define data elements, allows for flexible and customizable data representation. Did you know that XML emerged in the late 1990s as a simplified version of SGML to facilitate data exchange over the internet?

The book progresses systematically, starting with core concepts such as elements, attributes, and document structure. It then advances into complex topics like XML Schema Definition (XSD) for validating documents and XPath for efficient data extraction. Through numerous examples and case studies, readers gain practical insights into real-world applications.

The book also acknowledges ongoing debates about XML's efficiency compared to formats like JSON, offering a balanced perspective on its strengths, particularly in schema validation and data integrity. This hands-on approach makes the book a valuable resource for software developers, data architects, and anyone looking to enhance their data handling skills.

    Creative Evolution

Henri Bergson’s highly influential book, ‘Creative Evolution’ (‘Evolution Creatrice’, 1907) established a theory of evolution - called ‘Creative Evolution Theory’ - which gained a considerable following in the first half of the 20th Century. It also helped the author to win the Nobel Prize in 1927 for his work investigating the origins of biological information and divergence in the evolutionary process.

In this work, Bergson seeks an alternative explanation as to how new forms of life emerge compared to those prevailing at the time. This included both the ‘mechanistic’ or deterministic explanations of biological science on the one hand, and on the other the ‘finalist’ or strictly teleological explanation of those who believed in the hand of a ‘Creator’ or God, coordinating life in a divine plan.

Creative Evolution proposes a third explanation in what Bergson calls élan vital’ or ‘vital impetus’, a force that infuses all matter and drives it forward into an ever-changing and infinite variety of living forms. This appears as a vital impetus that can also be related to humanity’s own creative life force. Bergson’s book builds on his ‘Theory of Time’ as set forth in works such as ‘Matter and Memory’ and ‘Time and Free Will’. In these works, and in the present volume, Bergson sees continuous ‘duration’ as real time, as opposed to the way in which time is divided up into measured units by the ‘organising’ mind of science.

Life, as we really experience it, is subject to constant change and our tendency to explain evolutionary change by looking only at ‘ends’ achieved rather than the processes by which they emerge, divorces us from the life force itself.

Instead, Bergson feels we need to reengage with our instincts as well as with our intelligence in order to understand the evolutionary process, as both co-exist to some extent within us, all forms of life having a common origin in that instinctual, innate knowledge of simpler life forms. Though these may be unconscious or semi-conscious, they are, in Bergson’s view, much more in touch with the ever-changing nature of real time than the analytical and rational knowledge of our species

As he writes: “Our thought, in its purely logical form, is incapable of presenting the true nature of life, the full meaning of the evolutionary movement. Created by life, in definite circumstances, to act on definite things, how can it embrace life, of which it is only an emanation or an aspect?”

It is to attempt an answer to this question that ‘Creative Evolution’ directs its attention.

The two titles in this bundle are:
Agriculture - Agriculture stands at the heart of human civilization, sustaining populations, economies, and ecosystems around the globe. As the primary source of food and materials for countless industries, agriculture is fundamental to our daily lives. Yet, as demand for food and resources grows, traditional farming practices have come under scrutiny for their impact on land, water, and ecosystems. This situation has sparked a profound exploration into how agriculture can evolve to meet future needs without compromising environmental health or resource availability. In response to these challenges, sustainable agriculture has emerged as a guiding framework. Rather than depleting resources, sustainable agriculture seeks to work in harmony with nature, fostering productive systems that can endure and even improve over time.
Environmental Science - Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary field that integrates various scientific disciplines to study the natural world and the impact of human activities on it. This branch of science explores the complex interactions between living organisms, their physical surroundings, and the broader ecosystems they form. The primary goal of environmental science is to understand how natural systems function, identify environmental problems, and develop strategies for addressing these issues. At its core, environmental science seeks to answer fundamental questions about the earth's resources, how they are used, and how human actions influence the balance of ecosystems. It draws from biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and social sciences to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environment.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the joints. In RA, the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium, the lining of the membranes that surround the joints.
This causes inflammation that can lead to joint damage, pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function. RA commonly affects joints in the hands, wrists, and knees symmetrically, meaning both sides of the body are usually affected equally. It can also affect other organs and systems in the body. Treatment typically involves medication to reduce inflammation and pain, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery in advanced cases.
Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent joint damage.

“Without Our Consent” is a trailblazing story on pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides from his own experience and allergies to these chemicals. An immense amount of research has been used to paint a picture of abundance use by agriculture and livestock farming in the USA. Researching this topic our author Bob Skerstonas has provided us with a wealth of information backing this up with over 395 footnotes for a reader to dig deeper into the overuse of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. 90% of the US population has detectable concentrations of pesticides or their metabolites in their urine or blood samples.Pesticides have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cancer, birth defects, and hormonal imbalances.Farmworkers and pesticide applicators are particularly at risk of pesticide exposure and related health problems.
