Sinossi

"First Video Games" explores the captivating origins of the digital entertainment we know today, tracing the evolution from rudimentary pixel graphics to modern immersive worlds. It reveals how early hardware limitations spurred remarkable creativity in game design. The book uncovers how pioneering developers ingeniously worked around constraints, establishing fundamental design principles still evident in contemporary games. For example, early developers used limited color palettes and pixel-based displays to create iconic characters and environments, demonstrating that creativity can flourish even within strict technological boundaries. The book examines pivotal games like "Tennis for Two," "Spacewar!," and "Pong," highlighting that game technology and innovation weren't solely about technical advancements but also about artistic vision. By analyzing these early arcade games and home consoles, "First Video Games" showcases the historical landscape of computer science and electrical engineering, explaining key concepts in accessible language. It progresses from fundamental concepts of early computer graphics to specific case studies and culminates in an analysis of their lasting legacy on modern game design. This unique perspective emphasizes the human element behind the technology, making it valuable for video game enthusiasts, students of game design, and historians of technology alike. By understanding the challenges and triumphs of early developers, readers gain insights into problem-solving, resource management, and creative design, offering a comprehensive account of the foundations of modern game design.

From Chaos to Stability - How...

At the heart of Israel Rosenfield and Edward Ziff's inquiry is the nature of brain function. The sensory world is disordered and chaotic. There are no labels for tables, chairs, or airplanes, and indeed there are no colors, sounds, or smells, only photons, airwaves, odorant molecules, and so on, which are unlabeled and impossible to "know."

To make sense of this chaos, the brain must simplify the sensory inputs by creating, or inventing, the colors, sounds, smells, forms, and faces that are perceived in consciousness, which become a proxy for the chaotic world in which we live. The brain's ability to generalize and categorize these invented perceptions, and to relate them to one another, enables it to form memories, which are not fixed representations of things past, but a dynamic and malleable function of the brain that is relational.

When formation of these worlds breaks down, neurological differences arise. Although the mechanisms that transform sensory chaos into the simplified perceptions experienced in consciousness remain elusive, Rosenfield and Ziff relate what they have learned by means of imaging brain activity and by mapping the neural circuits that comprise memory traces. In addition, the authors offer perspectives for future studies of consciousness.

National parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Glacier preserve some of this country's most cherished wilderness landscapes. While visions of pristine, uninhabited nature led to the creation of these parks, they also inspired policies of Indian removal. By contrasting the native histories of these places with the links between Indian policy developments and preservationist efforts, this work examines the complex origins of the national parks and the troubling consequences of the American wilderness ideal. The first study to place national park history within the context of the early reservation era, it details the ways that national parks developed into one of the most important arenas of contention between native peoples and non-Indians in the twentieth century.

"This is a delightful account of one of the deepest and most fascinating explorations going on today at the frontier of our knowledge." —Carlo Rovelli, bestselling author of The Order of Time and Seven Brief Lessons on PhysicsA revelatory exploration of how a "theory of everything" depends upon our understanding of the human mindThe whole goal of physics is to explain what we observe. For centuries, physicists believed that observations yielded faithful representations of what is out there. But when they began to study the subatomic realm, they found that observation often interferes with what is being observed—that the act of seeing changes what we see. The same is true of cosmology: our view of the universe is inevitably distorted by observation bias. And so whether they’re studying subatomic particles or galaxies, physicists must first explain consciousness—and for that they must turn to neuroscientists and philosophers of mind.Neuroscientists have painstakingly built up an understanding of the structure of the brain. Could this help physicists understand the levels of self-organization they observe in other systems? These same physicists, meanwhile, are trying to explain how particles organize themselves into the objects around us. Could their discoveries help explain how neurons produce our conscious experience?Exploring these questions and more, George Musser tackles the extraordinary interconnections between quantum mechanics, cosmology, human consciousness, and artificial intelligence. Combining vivid descriptions with portraits of scientists working on the cutting edge, Putting Ourselves Back in the Equation shows how theories of everything depend on theories of mind—and how they might be one and the same.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Cardiology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart conditions and diseases. The field focuses on understanding the intricate workings of the heart and circulatory system, ensuring optimal heart health, and addressing cardiovascular disorders, which are among the leading causes of death worldwide. As the global prevalence of heart disease rises, cardiology has become one of the most important and rapidly evolving fields in modern medicine. Its scope extends from the management of common heart diseases to the exploration of innovative treatments that can significantly improve patient outcomes.
The human heart is an extraordinary organ that pumps blood throughout the body, supplying oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs. Cardiologists specialize in understanding the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the heart, along with how these affect the body’s overall health. Over the years, advancements in medical science, technology, and research have enabled cardiologists to diagnose and treat a wide variety of heart conditions, ranging from common issues such as hypertension and arrhythmias to more complex disorders like coronary artery disease and heart failure. These advancements are the result of groundbreaking discoveries, improved diagnostic methods, and refined therapeutic techniques.
In addition to treating existing heart conditions, cardiology also places a strong emphasis on prevention. Preventive cardiology aims to identify risk factors such as high cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise, which increase the likelihood of heart disease. By promoting a heart-healthy lifestyle and early detection of potential problems, the goal is to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular events and improve the quality of life for patients. Public health initiatives and education about cardiovascular risk factors are key components of this preventive approach.
