Sinossi

PARTNERS FOR POSSIBILITY is the compelling story of what can happen when you think in terms of possibility instead of deficiency. It’s the story of what happens when people say yes.

This is the story of Partners for Possibility, an organisation that has brokered trailblazing partnerships between business leaders and school principals – partnerships that continue to reap astonishing results in the schools they are working in. It’s the story of an organisation dedicated to changing South Africa’s ailing education system, one school at a time.

Partners for Possibility is like no other educational intervention in South Africa because it is simultaneously a movement of active citizenship, a nation-building process, a leadership programme, a corporate social investment and a system that has the power to change the very fabric of South African society.

This book is a beautiful collection and celebration of many different voices which share one common experience – Partners for Possibility. It is precisely this commonality that provides the inspiration, the power and the authenticity behind the stories. This book will help all of us to rediscover our courage to feel differently and act meaningfully as we impact our own spheres of influence, while at the same time deepening our respect for a leadership movement,PfP, that is so desperately needed in these troublesome and bewildering times.
? Dr John D Volmink, Chair, Umalusi Council

The story of Partners for Possibility is the original Thuma Mina Story. It’s a story about someone saying, ‘something needs to be fixed, let me do what I can to fix it’. It’s a story of collaboration and leadership development for change anchored in the power of dreams, hope and tenacity. It’s also a story about believing in people and restoring their self-belief and resilience. I’ve been fortunate to encounter some of the leaders who have been shaped by the programme and was inspired by their transformation. Along with others, some of their uplifting stories are featured in this book. A lot of mistakes being made in our institutions are the result of leadership, governance and capacity related challenges. PfP addresses these while contributing to resilient communities. I honour Louise van Rhyn for choosing to light a candle against darkness and call on all who have the resources and skills to join the programme. Through your contributions we’ll bring our beautiful country closer to the constitutional commitment, our National Development Plan objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals.

An indispensable guide to reducing the suffering-of patients and caregivers alike-and to improving healthcare delivery for all

In our efforts to treat patients, cure illness, and manage institutions, healthcare professionals too often overlook the fundamental purpose everyone in the industry shares: to alleviate suffering.

Press Ganey’s Chief Nursing Officer, Christina Dempsey, has worked everywhere in healthcare, from the ward floor to the hospital boardroom. She has also experienced the system as a patient and as a family member of a critically ill patient. In The Antidote to Suffering, this 30-year healthcare veteran and patient-experience thought leader argues that the key to improving healthcare is to reduce the suffering-physical, psychological, and emotional-of patients and caregivers alike through Compassionate Connected CareTM.

Drawing on her 360-degree perspective, Dempsey offers a comprehensive, detailed, evidence-based plan that addresses the clinical, operational, cultural, and behavioral dimensions of care that every patient and caregiver experiences, in every setting. When suffering decreases, Dempsey argues, outcomes improve for patients and those who care for them. A virtuous cycle takes hold, leading to increases in morale, loyalty, and productivity and results in a culture that drives quality, safety, and value. It paves the path for creating a new national healthcare culture-one that values compassion, fosters efficiency, and drives innovation

The Antidote to Suffering is the first book to explore the pervasiveness of suffering in our healthcare system, and to provide the strategies and tools to:

    * Identify and measure suffering throughout your organization

    * Create a system in which every clinical response is informed by compassion

    * Operationalize staff behavior to promote meaning and purpose

    * Increase productivity by building a culture of collaboration

Reducing human suffering isn’t just a moral imperative for healthcare providers. It’s a practical way to improve organizations and fix our broken system-without sacrificing the respect, dignity, and compassion we all deserve.

In the history of human progress, the most fruitful developments take place at the intersection of different lines of thoughts. The timeless topic of leadership has for centuries always been dominated by the ideas and philosophies of Western thinkers, business executives, and academics. For far too long, the voice from the East has been deafeningly silent. As Asia rises in the global economy, a question that begs an answer is, "What is the leadership tradition of the East and how will it play out globally?"Leadership consultant BH Tan has written an outstanding exposition of the Asian perspective on leadership. He has drawn upon his deep appreciation of Daoist principles to propose a complementary approach to the Western-centric leadership mindset.A lifelong student of Eastern and Western thinking and leadership, he challenges some of our most cherished truths and perspectives. "Either-or" is out. The "both-and" philosophy will lead us to a better future in this complex, chaotic, yet interconnected world. This is the essence of leadership paradoxes. When we integrate both streams of thinking, we transcend contradictions and tap into greater possibilities for progress and creativity. This can only help us lead more wisely and courageously.
