Sinossi

Lost Sculptures explores the compelling stories behind significant sculptures vanished through time, destruction, or theft. It delves into art history, examining the social and political contexts surrounding these losses, from iconoclasm to wartime looting. The book emphasizes how the disappearance of these artworks affects our understanding of history and cultural identity, creating voids in our collective memory.

For instance, the book discusses the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan, highlighting the deliberate targeting of cultural heritage. The book uniquely focuses not only on the sculptures' artistic value but also on the broader implications of their disappearance, such as the psychological impact on communities.

Structured to guide readers through a comprehensive exploration, it begins by introducing key concepts before examining specific examples and culminates in modern challenges like art theft and the illicit antiquities trade. It unveils how the absence of these sculptures alters art history's trajectory, forcing re-evaluation of established narratives and compelling a deeper appreciation for preservation.

    An heir to a fortune…a downward spiral…
Danny took me to his dorm to play a new video game. An enchanted village in the forest…a world populated with elven femboys. I didn’t like it, but I couldn’t look away.
Weird things started happening after that. We’re both changing. He’s becoming aggressive. I’m growing docile.
I’ve had to ask my dad for more money. I told him it’s for tutoring sessions…and that’s not a lie. Danny is teaching me so much. His lessons are precious.
He told me to do something terrible. Everyone’s watching. They’re shouting. They’re angry.
But it doesn’t matter. I’ll obey. I’ll do anything to please my tutor.

The Germans laid the groundwork for the era of ballistic missiles to follow with the “Vengeance Weapons” program. The advent of relatively advanced liquid and solid fuels for rocket weapons made them viable again after a period during which rifled artillery overshadowed them. An additional factor creating German interest in military rockets came from their complete omission among the restrictions placed on Germany's army by the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I. This major loophole led the Germans to hope improved rocketry could replace artillery, which the Treaty nearly banned.
To counter the V-weapons, the Allies implemented Operation Crossbow, which aimed to find ways to stop or at least reduce the number of V-weapons reaching their targets, and to reassure the population of Allied nations that these terrifying new weapons could be understood and overcome. The importance of Operation Crossbow was high enough that, despite being involved in massive military operations in Sicily and preparing for the Normandy landings, the Allies diverted manpower and resources to counter the V-weapon threat. This decision was made at the highest level, and those in charge were determined to ensure that Operation Crossbow would not fail.
All of the Allies recognized the immense strategic value of these technologies and wished to secure their benefits for themselves. As the Soviets contemplated additional expansion following the “Great Patriotic War” and the U.S. military came to understand the putative allies of today would emerge as the enemies of tomorrow, the men possessing knowledge of the V-2 rockets and other Third Reich military technology programs became seen as crucial pieces in the incipient standoff between the two new superpowers.

Dan Akee was part of the Navajo code talker units of the US Marine Corps that relayed radio and phone messages in their native dialect during World War II operations.

The method was fast and indecipherable to enemy eavesdroppers, as Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity - with its syntax, tonal qualities, and various dialects - making it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols, and is spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest. By one estimate, at the time of World War II, the Navajo language was understood by fewer than 30 non-Navajos.

Approximately 400 Navajo code talkers took part in every assault the US Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions, and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language. The code was never broken by the Japanese, and its security has been credited with contributing significantly to the capture of Iwo Jima in 1945.

The following are two recordings from code talker Dan Akee.

    America’s Forgotten Wars: The...

The history of the United States is to a large extent a history of armed conflict. The nation was first forged in war, a tough fight for independence against one of the world’s largest empires, and that fight would resume less than a generation later with the War of 1812. Then there were constant low-level conflicts with Native Americans as the nation expanded westwards, and occasionally the country engaged in full-scale war against the Sioux, Comanche, and Apache. The country also fought the Mexican-American War, starting in 1846, and the bloody Civil War starting in 1861. These conflicts helped the United States establish its modern boundaries and what kind of nation it would be.
In the 20th century, the United States came into its own as a global power through even more armed conflicts, including World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and campaigns against several Middle Eastern nations. While not all of these wars were won, they did establish the nation as a superpower, a status America retains today.
By the second half of the 19th century, still less than a century old, the United States had become a regional power. It had soundly defeated its southern neighbor, Mexico, and greatly enlarged itself in the process. America’s navy and merchant marines were becoming common sights on the high seas, and the country was at the beginning of the end of its drawn-out conquest of the Native Americans. However, it was a country divided deeply along political and economic lines, a tottering edifice many predicted would split apart. Even before the final tremors from the Mexican-American War had stopped disrupting the southern border, the United States found itself in a bloody civil war.
