Synopsis

Mountain Guides Soar explores the intricate relationship between Sherpa communities in Nepal and the burgeoning Himalayan tourism industry. This social science study examines how these indigenous communities navigate cultural preservation, economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability amid globalization's rapid changes. The book highlights the agency of Sherpas, showcasing their resilience and adaptability rather than portraying them as passive recipients of economic forces.

The book reveals intriguing facts, such as how Sherpa culture has evolved from traditional subsistence farming to a reliance on the trekking economy and how this transformation has impacted family structures and religious practices. It further delves into the challenges of environmental sustainability in the face of increased tourism. The book presents a thorough analysis, using ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and economic data to support its arguments.

Beginning with the historical and cultural context of the Sherpa people, the book progresses through an examination of the economic, social, and environmental impacts of tourism. It concludes by considering policy implications and offering recommendations for safeguarding Sherpa communities' well-being and preserving their cultural heritage. This approach provides a holistic understanding of the complex issues at stake, making it valuable for both academic and general audiences interested in adventure tourism and Sherpa communities.

After eight years working in Japan, immersing herself in its language and literature, Lesley Chan Downer set off in the footsteps of Matsuo Basho, Japan's most cherished poet, to explore the country's remote northern provinces. Basho's pilgrimage to find the landscapes that had inspired the great medieval poets gave birth to Japan's most famous travel book, rich in strange imagery and sometimes comic encounters along the road. In this intriguing cross-threading of journeys, perceptions and exquisite haiku, Lesley creates her own funny, loving and honest portrayal of contemporary Japan. As she walks, she finds at one and the same time a drab, post-industrial landscape of concrete and cables, but also a land still full of the old enchantments. Nights in thatched highland villages and saké-drenched poetry sessions encourage her to see for herself if any of the legendary hermit-priests still survive in the sacred mountains of the north.

Osman I, also known as Osman Ghazi, was the founder of the Ottoman dynasty and the ruler of the Kayi tribe, a key figure in the creation of one of history's most influential empires. The state he established, originally called the Ottoman Beylik or Emirate, grew from a small Turkmen principality in the late thirteenth century into a global power, dominating much of Southeastern Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa for centuries. While the empire he founded lasted until the end of World War I, the man himself remains shrouded in mystery.
Due to the scarcity of historical records from Osman’s lifetime, much of what is known about him is based on oral traditions and legends that developed long after his death. There are no known contemporary written sources from his reign, and the Ottomans themselves did not document his life until the fifteenth century, over a hundred years after he passed away. This gap in documentation has made it difficult for historians to separate fact from fiction, with some scholars even describing the period of Osman's life as a "black hole" of historical knowledge, unable to be reconstructed with certainty.
The traditional accounts of Osman’s ancestry trace his lineage to the Oghuz Turks, specifically the Kay tribe. However, many historians believe that the stories surrounding his ancestry were fabricated later to legitimize the Ottoman dynasty’s rule. These narratives were likely developed as the dynasty sought to strengthen its claim to power and emphasize its noble heritage.
