Sinossi

Unsolved Ancient Mysteries delves into the captivating world of historical enigmas, exploring perplexing sites and artifacts that challenge conventional historical narratives. It examines undeciphered languages like the Voynich Manuscript, the origins of megalithic structures such as Göbekli Tepe, and the abrupt abandonment of ancient settlements, like those of the Maya Civilization. The book emphasizes that many accepted historical narratives are incomplete and that these mysteries represent critical gaps in our knowledge.

The book takes a systematic approach, first introducing the concept of "unsolved mysteries" and then delving into specific examples. It explores how archaeologists and linguists use methods like radiocarbon dating and linguistic analysis to try and understand these mysteries. Rather than offering definitive answers, Unsolved Ancient Mysteries focuses on the methodological challenges inherent in studying these ancient sites, making it a valuable resource for those interested in archaeology, ancient civilizations, and the ongoing quest to understand our past.

The culmination of the book synthesizes findings from case studies, looking at how a multidisciplinary approach is essential for understanding these mysteries. The book progresses across chapters in a systematic fashion, providing a fresh perspective, exploring the limitations of current research, and stimulating critical thinking about the unsolved mysteries of our past.

"I was not Zora of Orange County any more, I was now a little colored girl."

Originally published in 1928, How it Feels to be Colored Me is an autobiographical essay in which the author recounts experiences from her childhood in an all-black community in Eatonville, Florida, and her first experiences of feeling different.

Hurston lived comfortably due to her father being a local Baptist preacher and the mayor of Eatonville, but after the death of her mother when she was just thirteen, Zora was sent to a boarding school in Jacksonville, where she immediately became "colored."

Rather than bow to sorrow or victimhood, Hurston transforms these experiences into a celebration of individuality, resilience, and joy, encouraging us not to focus on race, but on self-awareness and the similarities we all have in common. Writing with humour and an unapologetic sense of self, Hurston invites us to see identity not as a burden but as a source of power.
Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) was an influential American writer and central figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Eatonville, Florida—one of the first all‑Black incorporated towns in the United States—she grew up surrounded by Black autonomy and culture, a foundation that shaped her literary voice.

Her most celebrated novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), is now considered a classic of American literature, praised for its lyrical prose and powerful portrayal of Black womanhood. Though her work was underappreciated during her lifetime, Hurston's legacy was revived in the 1970s and she is now recognised as one of the most original and vital voices in 20th‑century literature.

This is a Pariyatti audiobook of "Buddhism in Myanmar: A Short History" (Wheel Publication No. 399–401) by Roger Bischoff narrated by Shelina Hetherington.

"Myanmar, or Burma as the nation has been known throughout history, is one of the major countries following Theravada Buddhism. In recent years Myanmar has attained special eminence as the host for the Sixth Buddhist Council, held in Yangon (Rangoon) between 1954 and 1956, and as the source from which two of the major systems of Vipassaná meditation have emanated out into the greater world: the tradition springing from the Venerable Mahāsi Sayādaw of Thathana Yeiktha and that springing from Sayagyi U Ba Khin of the International Meditation Centre.

"This booklet is intended to offer a short history of Buddhism in Myanmar from its origins through the country’s loss of independence to Great Britain in the late nineteenth century. I have not dealt with more recent history as this has already been well documented. To write an account of the development of a religion in any country is a delicate and demanding undertaking and one will never be quite satisfied with the result. This booklet does not pretend to be an academic work shedding new light on the subject. It is designed, rather, to provide the interested nonacademic reader with a brief overview of the subject.

"One of the objectives of the narrative is to show that the Buddha’s Teaching did not make a lasting impression on Myanmar immediately upon first arrival. The Sásana had to be re-introduced or purified again and again from the outside until Myanmar had matured to the point of becoming one of the main shrines where the Theravada Buddhist teachings are preserved. The religion did not develop in Myanmar. Rather, the Myanmar people developed through the religion until the Theravada faith became embedded in their culture and Pali Buddhism became second nature to them."   —Roger Bischoff

  • Stealing My Religion - Not Just Any Cultural Appropriation - cover

Stealing My Religion - Not Just...

We think we know cultural appropriation when we see it. Blackface or Native American headdresses as Halloween costumes—these clearly give offense. But what about Cardi B posing as the Hindu goddess Durga in a Reebok ad, AA's twelve-step invocation of God, or the earnest namaste you utter at the end of yoga class?

Liz Bucar unpacks the ethical dilemmas of a messy form of cultural appropriation: the borrowing of religious doctrines, rituals, and dress for political, economic, and therapeutic reasons. Does borrowing from another's religion harm believers? Bucar sees religion as an especially vexing arena for appropriation debates because faiths overlap and imitate each other and because diversity within religious groups scrambles our sense of who is an insider and who is not.

Stealing My Religion guides us through three revealing case studies—the hijab as a feminist signal of Muslim allyship, a study abroad "pilgrimage" on the Camino de Santiago, and the commodification of yoga in the West. Reflecting on her own missteps, Bucar comes to a surprising conclusion: the way to avoid religious appropriation isn't to borrow less but to borrow more—to become deeply invested in learning the roots and diverse meanings of our enthusiasms.
