Sinossi

"Pyramid Bloodlines" examines the profound connection between ancient pyramids and the royal dynasties that commissioned them, arguing that these monumental structures were far more than just elaborate tombs. The book explores how pyramid construction served as a critical tool for legitimizing royal power, consolidating resources, and projecting divine authority. For example, the evolution of pyramid design often mirrored shifts in political landscapes, with each dynasty imprinting its unique style and ideology onto these imposing structures.

The book begins by surveying notable pyramid complexes worldwide, from Egypt to Mesoamerica, before delving into the intricacies of pyramid design and construction techniques relative to dynastic changes. It analyzes the role of pyramids in royal succession, funerary rituals, and ancestor worship, highlighting their function as focal points for reinforcing the legitimacy of rulers and ensuring the continuity of royal bloodlines. Through archaeological findings, textual sources, and interdisciplinary connections, "Pyramid Bloodlines" offers a fresh perspective on ancient history and elite rule.

The book progresses by first introducing the world’s most notable pyramid complexes and then examining in detail the evolution of pyramid design in relation to dynastic changes and the role of pyramids in royal succession and funerary rituals. This approach culminates in demonstrating the tangible benefits, such as validated authority, derived from investing in pyramid building.

By focusing on the intertwining of royal bloodlines, ancient civilizations, and pyramid construction, "Pyramid Bloodlines" provides valuable insights into the power dynamics that shaped the ancient world.

Varṇaprastha is a stage of life in the Vedic tradition often considered as the third stage in the four stages of life (āśrama) outlined in the ancient Vedas. Varṇaprastha, which means "retiring into the woods," is characterized by a gradual withdrawal from worldly affairs and a focus on spiritual pursuits. The stage of Varṇaprastha is typically undertaken by people in their fifties or sixties after they have completed their duties as householders and raised their children. In this stage, individuals are encouraged to devote themselves to spiritual pursuits, including meditation, prayer, and the study of religious texts, and detach themselves from material possessions and desires.

During Varṇaprastha, individuals are expected to detach themselves from their families and communities gradually and to live an ascetic lifestyle. They may choose to live in seclusion in the forest or in a hermitage, or they may continue to live with their families in a more detached and spiritually-focused manner. The purpose of this stage is to prepare individuals for the final stage of life, sannyasa, in which they renounce all material possessions and dedicate themselves fully to spiritual pursuits. The stage of Varṇaprastha is considered an important part of the spiritual journey, allowing individuals to focus on their spiritual growth and prepare themselves for the eventual goal of liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

As baby boomers retire and enter their later years, many are turning to spirituality and religion as a source of comfort and guidance. Some are seeking a deeper connection to a higher power, while others are looking for a sense of community and purpose in their lives. This trend has led to an increase in the popularity of yoga, meditation, and other spiritual practices among this generation.

Narrated by author, Emmy-nominated actor, and lifelong Bhakti yogi Sripad Jagannatha Das.

Am I Alone Here? - Notes on...

    Peter Orner

"Stories, both my own and those I've taken to heart, make up whoever it is that I've become," Peter Orner writes in this collection of essays about reading, writing, and living. Orner reads and writes everywhere he finds himself: a hospital cafeteria, a coffee shop in Albania, or a crowded bus in Haiti. The result is a book of unlearned meditations that stumbles into memoir.

Among the many writers Orner addresses are Isaac Babel and Zora Neale Hurston, both of whom told their truths and were silenced; Franz Kafka, who professed loneliness but craved connection; Robert Walser, who spent the last twenty-three years of his life in a Swiss insane asylum, working at being crazy; and Juan Rulfo, who practiced the difficult art of silence. Virginia Woolf, Eudora Welty, Yasunari Kawabata, Saul Bellow, Mavis Gallant, John Edgar Wideman, William Trevor, and Václav Havel make appearances, as well as the poet Herbert Morris—about whom almost nothing is known.

An elegy for an eccentric late father, and the end of a marriage, Am I Alone Here? is also a celebration of the possibility of renewal. At once personal and panoramic, this book will inspire listeners to return to the essential stories of their own lives.

This edition brings Dewey’s educational theory into sharp focus, framing his two classic works by frank assessments, past and present, of the practical applications of Dewey’s ideas. In addition to a substantial introduction in which Philip W. Jackson explains why more of Dewey’s ideas haven’t been put into practice, this edition restores a “lost” chapter, dropped from the book by Dewey in 1915.
