  The Oyo Empire, one of the most powerful and influential states in West Africa, has a rich and complex history that spans centuries. The history of the Oyo Empire dates back to the 14th century, when it emerged as one of the leading Yoruba kingdoms in the area. Over time, Oyo became a dominant power in West Africa, shaping the political, economic, and cultural landscape of the region. 
  At its height, the Oyo Empire controlled a vast territory stretching across modern-day Nigeria and parts of Benin and Togo. The empire was strategically positioned along important trade routes, allowing it to thrive economically and maintain strong ties with neighboring kingdoms. Its economy was based primarily on agriculture, with crops such as yams, millet, and sorghum being grown in abundance. Additionally, the Oyo people were involved in long-distance trade, exchanging goods like kola nuts, textiles, and metalwork with other African states and even European traders. 
  Politically, the Oyo Empire was an advanced and well-organized state. The Alafin, the emperor of Oyo, was the supreme ruler and held significant authority over the empire. However, the Alafin did not rule alone. The Oyo Mesi, a council of chiefs, played a critical role in governance, advising the Alafin and ensuring the balance of power. This system of governance allowed the empire to remain stable for centuries, even as it faced external threats and internal challenges. The military was also a key component of the empire’s strength, with the Oyo army being one of the most formidable in West Africa. The empire’s military success was due in part to its highly disciplined forces, as well as the use of cavalry, which gave it a tactical advantage over its enemies.

  Many studies of China's relations with and influence on Southeast Asia tend to focus on how Beijing has used its power asymmetry to achieve regional influence. Yet, scholars and pundits often fail to appreciate the complexity of the contemporary Chinese state and society, and just how fragmented, decentralized, and internationalized China is today. 
   
   
   
  In The Ripple Effect, Enze Han argues that a focus on the Chinese state alone is not sufficient for a comprehensive understanding of China's influence in Southeast Asia. Instead, we must look beyond the Chinese state, to non-state actors from China, such as private businesses and Chinese migrants. These actors affect people's perception of China in a variety of ways, and they often have wide-ranging as well as long-lasting effects on bilateral relations. Looking beyond the Chinese state's intentional influence reveals many situations that result in unanticipated changes in Southeast Asia. Han proposes that to understand this increasingly globalized China, we need more conceptual flexibility regarding which Chinese actors are important to China's relations, and how they wield this influence, whether intentional or not.

  In Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right, Goldberg speaks for the millions of Americans who are saying: Enough! Enough of lunatics like Rosie O'Donnell who think ""Radical Christianity"" is ""as big a threat to America as Radical Islam."" Enough of the hyperbolic liberal rhetoric comparing Bush to Hitler and Abu Ghraib to a Saddam Hussein torture chamber. And please, enough of the military-hating crazies who run San Francisco!  
  But Goldberg has also had it with hypocritical Republicans who say they're for small government but then spend our hard-earned tax money like Imelda Marcos in a shoe store. He's also had it with weak and timid Republicans who won't stand up and fight against racial preferences, too afraid that the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of the world will call them bigots. In plain English, he's had it with Republicans who are afraid to be conservative! The 2006 election was a wake-up call, he warns, and if the wimps on the Right fail to regain their courage, recover their principles, and reclaim their sense of fiscal responsibility, the crazies on the Left just might win the White House in 2008.

  As the oft-repeated and invariably accurate pearl of wisdom goes, a dog truly is man's best friend. For a long time, people have almost universally loved dogs, and it seems to have been that way for at least tens of thousands of years.   People's obsession with felines is an enigma in and of itself. Unlike dogs, famously known as man's most excitable, trustworthy, and loyal friend, cats are oftentimes indifferent, guarded, and yet finicky little furry creatures who only yearn for attention and affection when one is neck-deep in work or otherwise preoccupied. And still, people adore them all the same. 
  In a recent poll that surveyed 600 American college students, 60% of the participants identified themselves as “dog lovers,” whereas only 11% pledged their love for cats. The remaining 29% regarded themselves as fans of both critters or fans of neither. Be that as it may, there is said to be anywhere between a staggering 88=94 million pet cats in the United States alone, which eclipses the roughly 84-90 million pet dogs in the country.
