Sinossi

Indian Dynasties explores the powerful empires that shaped India's history, from the Mauryas to the Mughals. This book delves into the political power, social structures, and economic systems of each dynasty, revealing their lasting impact. A key insight is understanding how the recurring cycles of dynastic rise and fall stemmed from internal power struggles and external pressures.

The book examines the unique contributions of each empire, for example, the Gupta Empire's "golden age" of scientific and artistic achievement. It also highlights the Delhi Sultanate's impact on Indian society. By using archaeological findings, inscriptions, and literary texts, this book offers a comprehensive overview of India's dynastic history.

The narrative progresses chronologically, starting with the pre-Mauryan context and moving through the Maurya, Gupta, Delhi Sultanate, and Mughal Empires. Indian Dynasties provides a fresh perspective by considering the social and economic factors that influenced each empire, moving beyond just rulers and battles to examine the lives of ordinary people.

A collection of three novels from the experimental feminist writer: “Literal Madness is Acker at her most powerful, disturbing, and provocative.” —Catherine Texier, author of Victorine

Kathy Goes to Haiti, the first of three novels in Literal Madness, “speaks to us out of a delightful mock-naivete that reminds one at times of the Dick and Jane readers rewritten as manuals for politics and sex . . . At once hilarious and terrifying, [it] has all the logic of a Caribbean tour and a nightmare combined” (Los Angeles Times).

My Death My Life by Pier Paolo Pasolini—wherein, among other things, the late Italian filmmaker solves his own murder, with the help of, among others, Romeo, Juliet, and the Bronté sisters—is a “scathing commentary on false values in art” (The Hartford Courant).

In the haunting Florida, Acker achieves “a nearly telegraphic reduction of the Bogart-Bacall movie Key Largo to fatalistic, tough-guy essentials” (Booklist).

“There’s a haunting method to Acker’s ‘madness’: a rough, raw, erudite wail against the postmodern loss of meaning and emotion.” —Kirkus Reviews

The Cultural Revolution, which took place in China from 1966 to 1976, was one of the most tumultuous and transformative periods in the country’s history. Initiated by Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China, the movement sought to preserve Chinese communism by removing capitalist, traditional, and cultural elements from Chinese society. At its core, the Cultural Revolution aimed to enforce Maoist ideology, reaffirm his leadership, and transform the cultural, social, and political fabric of China. It was a radical attempt to reshape Chinese society by addressing perceived corruption and ideological impurity within the Communist Party and broader society.
Mao’s motivations for launching the Cultural Revolution were multifaceted. After the failure of the Great Leap Forward (1958-1962), which had resulted in widespread famine and economic chaos, Mao’s position within the Communist Party had been weakened. The Cultural Revolution provided Mao with an opportunity to reassert his control over the party and eliminate rivals, many of whom were seen as too moderate or resistant to his vision of a truly communist society. It also reflected Mao’s concern that China was veering away from the revolutionary ideals that had initially driven the Communist Party.
The movement was largely propelled by the Red Guards, a youth-based movement that encouraged the younger generation to challenge authority and remove perceived counter-revolutionary influences. Under the banner of Maoism, the Red Guards sought to destroy the "Four Olds"—old customs, old culture, old habits, and old ideas. This led to widespread destruction of cultural heritage, including temples, books, and artworks. Intellectuals, teachers, and perceived enemies of the revolution were subjected to violent persecution, public humiliation, and forced labor, with many being sent to the countryside for "re-education."

The story of a young, Black Communist Party organizer wrongly convicted of attempting to incite insurrection and the landmark case that made him a civil rights hero.

Decades before the impeachment of an American president for a similar offense, Angelo Herndon was charged under Georgia law with "attempting to incite insurrection"—a crime punishable by death. In 1932, the eighteen-year-old Black Communist Party organizer was arrested and had his room illegally searched and his radical literature seized. Charged under an old slave insurrection statute, Herndon was convicted by an all-white jury and sentenced to eighteen to twenty years on a chain gang.

A legal odyssey of Herndon's narrow escape from certain death because of his unpopular political beliefs, You Can't Kill a Man Because of the Books He Reads explores Herndon's journey from Alabama coal miner to Communist Party organizer to Harlem hero and beyond. Brad Snyder tells the stories of the diverse coalition of people who rallied to his cause and who twice appealed his case to the US Supreme Court. They forced the Court to recognize free speech and peaceable assembly as essential rights in a democracy—a landmark decision in 1930s America as well as today.
