Sinossi

Chocolate: A Global History reveals the surprising journey of chocolate, tracing its path from ancient Mesoamerican rituals to its current status as a global commodity. The book explores how cocoa beans, once used as currency and in religious ceremonies by the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec civilizations, became a coveted treat in Europe and beyond. This transformation highlights not just a change in taste, but also shifts in global power dynamics and cultural interactions.

The narrative progresses chronologically, examining the European encounter with cocoa, the rise of cocoa plantations, and the subsequent reliance on forced labor. It further investigates the industrialization of chocolate in the 19th and 20th centuries, touching upon the creation of iconic brands and the globalization of consumption.

The book takes a comprehensive approach, drawing from various disciplines to offer a nuanced understanding of chocolate's intricate past, and encourages readers to consider ethical sourcing and sustainable practices within the chocolate industry.

World War I was the first major conflict in which new electronic means of transmitting and receiving messages became a major factor in political and military operations. The electric telegraph was developed in the first half of the 19th century, and by 1850, there were several telegraph companies around the world providing a service that allowed virtually instantaneous communication over long distances. This was a major breakthrough, but the telegraph depended on the availability of wires to transmit messages between stations, meaning that if these wires were broken or damaged, communications were cut off.
Of course, this came with a fundamental problem: radio, telephone, and telegraph messages could be intercepted by the enemy, potentially giving them notice of impending operations. To protect these electronic messages from being read by the enemy, armies began to use codes and ciphers to disguise the meaning of messages. Teams were created to devise effective codes and ciphers, and these were quickly followed by other teams whose role was to attempt to break the codes and ciphers used by the other side. As a result, a secret war began, almost completely hidden from public view, as the belligerents devised complex ways of hiding the real meaning of their own messages while simultaneously attempting to understand those of the enemy.
During the Second World War, cryptography suddenly became a significant factor in warfare because of mid-20th century advances in communications technology. With radios small and common enough to be fitted into most individual vehicles and readily carried in a man-portable form, information and orders flowed from supreme headquarters to individual squad leaders, tanks, and soldiers at the front and back again.
Despite the power of the new technology and its metamorphic effects on warfare, cryptography's story during World War II remained a very human one.

    Byzantine-Sassanian Wars -...

The Byzantine-Sassanian Wars were the result of a long-standing rivalry between two of the most powerful empires of late antiquity. The Byzantine Empire, the continuation of the Roman Empire in the East, and the Sassanian Empire of Persia, which had overthrown the Parthians in the third century, were natural adversaries. Their struggle for dominance spanned several centuries, shaping the political and military landscape of the Near East.
The foundations of this rivalry were rooted in geography, politics, and history. The Byzantine and Sassanian Empires shared a vast border stretching from the Caucasus to the Arabian deserts, making territorial disputes inevitable. Control over key regions such as Armenia, Mesopotamia, and the Levant was crucial for trade, military strategy, and influence. The buffer zones between them often became battlegrounds, as both empires sought to extend their influence over the same contested territories.
Religious and ideological differences further deepened the divide. The Byzantines, as heirs to the Roman tradition, followed Christianity, which had become the dominant faith under Emperor Constantine and later solidified as the state religion. In contrast, the Sassanian rulers were staunch supporters of Zoroastrianism, the ancient Persian faith. This religious contrast was more than just a matter of belief; it shaped policies, alliances, and even the justification for war. Both empires saw themselves as defenders of their respective faiths, using religion to rally support and justify their military campaigns.

The lives of five socialist women and their legacy for modern-day feminists

Red Valkyries explores the history of socialist feminism in Eastern Europe. Through the revolutionary careers of five prominent socialist women active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries—the aristocratic Bolshevik Alexandra Kollontai; the radical pedagogue Nadezhda Krupskaya; the polyamorous firebrand Inessa Armand; the deadly sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko; and the partisan, scientist, and global women's activist Elena Lagadinova—Kristen Ghodsee tells the story of the personal challenges faced by earlier generations of radicals.

None of these women was a perfect leftist. Their lives were filled with inner conflicts, contradictions, and sometimes outrageous privilege. But they managed to fight for their own political projects with perseverance and dedication. Always walking a fine line between the need for class solidarity and the desire to force their sometimes callous male colleagues to take women's issues seriously, these women pursued novel solutions with many lessons for those who might follow in their footsteps.

Dive into Northern Britain's Dark Ages in "a book which gives a satisfying and convincing account of this little-known part of Scotland's history" (Undiscovered Scotland).

Modern communications have driven motorways and pylons through the countryside, dwarfed us with TV and telephone masts, and drastically altered the way in which we move around, see, and understand Scotland. Recent politics and logistics have established borders and jurisdictions which now seem permanent and impervious. The Faded Map looks beyond these to remember a land that was once quiet and green. Alistair Moffat's "tireless research . . . and commanding knowledge" bring to vivid life the half-forgotten kings and kingdoms of two thousand years ago, from the time of the Romans into the early medieval period (Scottish Field).

In this "fascinating" account, Moffat describes the landscape these men and women moved through and writes of a Celtic society which spoke to itself in Old Welsh, where the Sons of Prophesy ruled, and the time when the English kings of Bernicia held sway over vast swathes of what is now Scotland (Alexander McCall Smith, author of Dream Angus). Heroes rode out of the mists to challenge them and then join with them, and the faint echo of the din of ancient battles can be heard as he takes the listener on a journey around a lost Scotland.
