Sinossi

In 'New Ideas for Work and Play: What a Girl Can Make and Do,' Lina Beard and Adelia B. Beard present a pioneering collection that celebrates creativity, self-reliance, and the diverse capabilities of young women at the turn of the 20th century. With a rich array of projects ranging from simple handicrafts to more ambitious constructions, the anthology encapsulates a period of significant cultural and social transition, reflecting the evolving roles and perceptions of women in society. The variety of literary styles, from instructional prose to narrative storytelling, serves not only to instruct but also to inspire, highlighting the Beards' forward-thinking vision of female empowerment and independence. The Beards' backgrounds as founders of the first Girl Scouts of the USA troops in their area and their contributions as early leaders in promoting girls' self-sufficiency and creativity imbue the collection with historical and cultural significance. Their work is situated at the intersection of several important movements of their time, including the Arts and Crafts movement and the early waves of feminism. Together, their efforts represent a concerted push towards redefining the scope of women's achievements and aspirations. This collection is recommended for readers interested in exploring the rich tapestry of past gender roles, the history of youth education and empowerment, and the creative spirit. 'New Ideas for Work and Play' offers an inspirational glimpse into the past, encouraging modern readers to appreciate the progress made in gender equality and the perennial value of self-reliance and innovation.

Vilified as the great failure of all London Transport bus classes, the DMS family of Daimler Fleetline was more like an unlucky victim of straitened times. Desperate to match staff shortages with falling demand for its services during the late 1960s, London Transport was just one organization to see nationwide possibilities and savings in legislation that was about to permit double-deck one-man-operation and partially fund purpose-built vehicles. However, prohibited by circumstances from developing its own rear-engined Routemaster (FRM) concept, LT instituted comparative trials between contemporary Leyland Atlanteans and Daimler Fleetlines. The latter came out on top, and massive orders followed. The first DMSs entering service on 2 January 1971.In service, however, problems quickly manifested. Sophisticated safety features served only to burn out gearboxes and gulp fuel. The passengers, meanwhile, did not appreciate being funnelled through the DMS's recalcitrant automatic fare-collection machinery only to have to stand for lack of seating. Boarding speeds thus slowed to a crawl, to the extent that the savings made by laying off conductors had to be negated by adding more DMSs to converted routes!Second thoughts caused the ongoing order to be amended to include crew-operated Fleetlines (DMs), noise concerns prompted the development of the B20 quiet bus variety, and brave attempts were made to fit the buses into the time-honored system of overhauling at Aldenham Works, but finally the problems proved too much. After enormous expenditure, the first DMSs began to be withdrawn before the final RTs came out of service, and between 1979 and 1983 all but the B20s were sold as is widely known, the DMSs proved perfectly adequate with provincial operators once their London features had been removed.OPO was to become fashionable again in the 1980s as the politicians turned on London Transport itself, breaking it into pieces in order to sell it off. Not only did the B20 DMSs survive to something approaching a normal lifespan, but the new cheap operators awakening with the onset of tendering made use of the type to undercut LT, and it was not until 1993 that the last DMS operated.

“This book is for anyone who loves nature photography or birding . . . A fine introduction to the beauty and diversity of this region.” —Southeastern Naturalist   From Belize to Brazil, the forests of the American neotropics are home to an astonishing array of birds—over 3,700 different species, or nearly forty percent of all the birds on earth. Birding enthusiasts Vera and Bob Thornton have spent fifteen years photographing these special and exotic birds in the rainforests of eleven different countries of Central and South America. In this book, you’ll find more than a hundred spectacular color photographs they took during their travels, along with a highly entertaining account of their adventures—and misadventures—in chasing these exotic neotropicals.   The birds pictured here are among the Thorntons’ personal favorites—birds that, in their words, “either dazzled us with their beauty, or charmed us by their behavior, or, in a few cases, simply challenged us by the mystique of their rarity.” This latter category includes such elusive and sought-after birds as the Black-crowned Antpitta, the Zigzag Heron, the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, the Bare-necked Umbrellabird, and the monkey-eating Harpy Eagle. In the accompanying text, Bob Thornton engagingly describes the challenges as well as the magic of negotiating the neotropical rainforests in search of colorful birds to photograph. For those who would like to follow in the Thorntons’ footsteps, there are also helpful tips about photographic gear and techniques, preferred places to see the birds, lodging, and guides. For everyone who enjoys excellent nature photography, Chasing Neotropical Birds is a must-have volume.

An uproariously funny examination of what one generation can teach to another—or not—from the Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times–bestselling author of You Can Date Boys When You’re Forty and Insane City. During the course of living (mumble, mumble) years, Dave Barry has gained much wisdom* (*actual wisdom not guaranteed) and he is eager to pass it on—to the next generation, the generation after that, and to those idiots who make driving to the grocery store in Florida a death-defying experience. In brilliant, brand-new, never-before-published pieces, Dave passes on home truths to his new grandson and to his daughter, Sophie (who will be getting her learner’s permit in 2015, the thought of which scares Dave silly). He explores the hometown of his youth, when all the men went to the city in suits and hats but still seemed to be having un-Mad Men–like fun, and how they turned into the neurotic hover-parents of today. He dives into everything from Google Glass (bottom line: “You feel like an idiot”) to why men hate birthdays and anniversaries; from How to Speak Spanish to firsthand accounts of the soccer craziness of Brazil and the just-plain-crazy craziness of Putin’s Russia, and a lot more besides. By the end, if you do not feel wiser, richer in knowledge, and more attuned to the universe…it wouldn’t be surprising. But you’ll have had a lot to laugh about!
