Sinossi

New Identities offers a guide to personal transformation through reshaping your sense of self, social connections, and habits. The book addresses breaking free from old patterns and preventing relapse into undesirable behaviors by focusing on identity shifting, social network restructuring, and habit adoption. It argues that intentional action across these three areas creates a synergistic effect for lasting change.

Did you know that ingrained self-perceptions, unsupportive social environments, and destructive habits are primary drivers of relapse? Or that your social environment significantly shapes your identity?

The book progresses systematically, starting with the core concepts and then delving into dismantling limiting beliefs through cognitive reframing and visualization. It also addresses how to assess your social network and cultivate supportive relationships. A major section focuses on the neuroscience and psychology of habit formation, providing tools for implementing positive habits.

New Identities stands out by integrating these elements into a holistic model, offering practical tools and exercises to aid readers in achieving a more fulfilling and resilient life.

Why is the internet so broken, and what could ever possibly fix it?

In Internet for the People, leading tech writer Ben Tarnoff offers an answer. The internet is broken, he argues, because it is owned by private firms and run for profit. Google annihilates your privacy and Facebook amplifies right-wing propaganda because it is profitable to do so. But the internet wasn't always like this. Tarnoff tells the story of the privatization that made the modern internet, and which set in motion the crises that consume it today.

The solution to those crises is straightforward: deprivatize the internet. Deprivatization aims at creating an internet where people, and not profit, rule. It calls for shrinking the space of the market and diminishing the power of the profit motive. It calls for abolishing the walled gardens of Google, Facebook, and the other giants that dominate our digital lives and developing publicly and cooperatively owned alternatives that encode real democratic control. To build a better internet, we need to change how it is owned and organized. Otherwise, a small number of executives and investors will continue to make choices on everyone's behalf, and these choices will remain tightly bound by the demands of the market. It's time to demand an internet by, and for, the people now.

Trade was able to increase in Europe around the world due to more effective ships being introduced, and some of the improvements that were made to the ships were first introduced by the Chinese. The introduction of multiple mast ships and the sternpost rudders allowed the ships to travel quicker and be more maneuverable. By the start of the 15th century, ships were now much larger and able to support long distance travel with a minimum number of crew aboard.
With that, the Portuguese started exploring the west coast of Africa and the Atlantic under orders from Prince Henry the Navigator. At this point, Europeans had not yet been capable of navigating completely around Africa since the ships being built were not yet fully capable of being able to sail very far from the coast and navigation in open waters was difficult, but the Portuguese continued pushing down the western African coast looking for ways to bypass the Ottomans and Muslims of Africa who had been making overland trade routes difficult. In 1451, Prince Henry the Navigator helped fund and develop a new type of ship, the caravel, that featured triangular lateen sails and would be able to travel in the open ocean and sail against the wind. In 1488, Bartholomew Diaz rounded the southern tip of Africa, named the Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal, and entered the Indian Ocean from the Atlantic.
The Portuguese found access to the trade regions that they had been searching for, but sailing from Portugal to India and beyond would require too many resources to travel with at once. To remedy this problem, Portugal began establishing a number of forts and trading posts along the route. The Portuguese were able to establish a fort on the west coast of India, Fort Manuel, in 1500, and in 1505 a fort was erected off the coast of Tanzania, thus beginning a trend of European colonization in Africa and Asia that would last for the next 400 years.

Pontiac's War, also referred to as Pontiac's Conspiracy or Pontiac's Rebellion, was a significant conflict that emerged in the aftermath of the French and Indian War (1754–1763). In 1763, a coalition of Native American tribes, disillusioned with the increasing British presence and control in the Great Lakes region, united under the leadership of the Odawa chieftain Pontiac. These Native American forces launched an offensive aimed at driving British soldiers and settlers from the region.
The war began in May 1763 when Native American warriors, fearful of British General Jeffrey Amherst’s harsh policies, launched a series of attacks on British forts and settlements. These assaults led to the destruction of eight forts, the death or capture of hundreds of colonists, and the forced evacuation of many others. The intensity of the conflict shocked the British, as the attacks, though widespread, were coordinated across many tribes, reflecting a united front among the Indigenous people. Despite their efforts, the Native Americans were unable to expel the British from the region. The war finally began to subside in 1764 after British military actions prompted peace talks, which continued into 1766.
