Sinossi

Impulse Control explores how mastering impulse control is crucial for addiction relapse prevention. This book uniquely combines neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral economics to offer practical strategies.

Did you know addiction fundamentally alters brain function, weakening impulse control? Understanding the neurobiological mechanisms, such as the role of dopamine and the prefrontal cortex, can significantly aid in managing addictive behaviors.

The book emphasizes that relapse often stems from impaired impulse control, not just a lack of willpower. It presents evidence-based techniques like mindfulness-based interventions and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tailored for craving management.

Furthermore, it highlights the reward deficiency syndrome and incentive sensitization theory, providing insights into impulsive reactions. The book progresses systematically, starting with the science behind impulse control, then moving to specific training techniques, and finally, showcasing real-world case studies.

Research shows that children whose parents/significant adults are involved in their school and education are more academically successful than children whose parents are not involved. Of course, work schedules, language and cultural barriers, and family commitments can get in the way of parental involvement. Fathers, in particular, are often not involved in their children’s schools. Burwell’s book addresses ways to get fathers involved in their young children’s education and school.

Getting Russia Right - 1st Edition

As US-Russian relations scrape the depths of cold-war antagonism, the promise of partnership that beguiled American administrations during the first post-Soviet decades increasingly appears to have been false from the start. Why did American leaders persist in pursuing it? Was there another path that would have produced more constructive relations or better prepared Washington to face the challenge Russia poses today?

With a practitioner's eye honed during decades of work on Russian affairs, Thomas Graham deftly traces the evolution of opposing ideas of national purpose that created an inherent tension in relations. Getting Russia Right identifies the blind spots that prevented Washington from seeing Russia as it really is and crafting a policy to advance American interests without provoking an aggressive Russian response. Distilling the Putin factor to reveal the contours of the Russia challenge facing the United States whenever he departs the scene, Graham lays out a compelling way to deal with it so that the United States can continue to advance its interests in a rapidly changing world.

Immigration is one of the most complicated issues of our time. Voices on all sides argue strongly for action and change. Christians find themselves torn between the desire to uphold laws and the call to minister to the vulnerable. In this book World Relief immigration experts Matthew Soerens and Jenny Yang move beyond the rhetoric to offer a Christian response to immigration. They put a human face on the issue and tell stories of immigrants' experiences in and out of the system. With careful historical understanding and thoughtful policy analysis, they debunk myths and misconceptions about immigration and show the limitations of the current immigration system. Ultimately they point toward immigration reform that is compassionate, sensible, and just as they offer concrete ways for you and your church to welcome and minister to your immigrant neighbors. This revised edition includes new material on refugees and updates in light of changes in political realities.

Here we have it: We may be looking at the years 2020-2021 and think a certain virus has been bad for the world population. However, what happened in these two years is nothing, proportionally, to the hundreds of millions of people who got wiped out by rat infestations spreading insanitary bacteria, resulting in the disease and death of huge parts of the European population in the mid-centuries.
The genesis or origin of the Black Death is a point of contention. The epidemic started in Central Asia or East Asia, but it wasn't till 1347 that it made its conclusive presence in Crimea. It spread out through the Mediterranean Basin, reaching Africa, Western Asia, and the remainder of Europe through Constantinople, Sicily, and the Italian Peninsula, probably brought by fleas surviving on black rats carried by Genoese servant ships. There's proof that the Black Death was spread out in big part by fleas-- which trigger pneumonic plague-- and the person-to-person contact by means of aerosols that pneumonic plague permits, which would clarify the epidemic's fast inland spread out, which would be expected if the main vector was rat fleas triggering bubonic plague.
The Black Death was the 2nd significant natural catastrophe to strike Europe in the late Middle Ages (the first being the Great Scarcity of 1315-- 1317), killing between 30 and sixty percent of Europe's population.
In the 14th century, the plague disease might have decreased the worldwide population from c. 475 million to 350-- 375 million. So, more than 100 million people died from it, which was almost a fourth of the world’s population.
To mention that such were difficult times, is an understatement. My empathy for those unfortunate souls has reached an entire new level of suffering. I don’t know about you, but when I did my research, I wanted to know more about it. I hope you feel the same way.
